Discord Server
Quote from tim on September 5, 2024, 9:35 pmI just created a Discord server for discussion around low vitamin A nutrition.
It's for people that (a) actively research health and nutrition and (b) have some physiological knowledge even if quite limited.
It's not for (a) people that believe vitamin A isn't essential and (b) science denialists in general.
@ggenereux2014 while some aspects won't be your cup of tea you are more than welcome to participate, you might enjoy any discussions that are to do with optimising vitamin A depletion that have nothing to do with the question of essentiality.
Conspiratorial angles are fine but they have to be backed by sound reasoning. Understanding how we are conspired against is part and parcel of acquiring health wisdom.
It's fine if you are primarily interested in resolving your own health issues and want to passively participate but it's not a place for naturopathic support for your health issues, it's a place to advance participant's knowledge.
There'll be little moderation, it'll be done via group consensus. I'm not too worried about swearing or manners, you just can't consistently be unpleasant or a pest.
Discord offers multiple discussion threads for different topics as well as group voice chat.
It'll be fun meeting people via the voice chat. I'm happy to MC (attempt) the first couple of group chats and go over some deep dives I've done.
@janelle525 @eio @fred
@puddleduck @andrew-b @liz
@jiri @orion @bella @hillcountry @bludicka
@david @andrew2 @davidw
and anyone else I missed once you have a discord account let me know and I will send you the Discord server invite link.

But the point of having a forum is that many people can search for and access valuable posts, which get stored and archived. I think it is a bad idea to start a chat-based discussion system, as the messages and discussions tend to get lost in such a setup. For small personal groups, it is fine. However, for recording and maintaining better ways of discussing topics, this forum works well for that.

That's a fair point.
What about a Subreddit alongside Discord?
The forum often gets used as a chat replacement. I think it's best to have both so that fewer higher quality posts are made.

This forum's search tool is very basic and doesn't locate pages just threads.
Discord has more advanced and polished search features:
https://support.discord.com/hc/en-us/articles/115000468588-Using-Search
I would argue that the majority of posts on this forum are more suited to Discord than a forum but any high quality posts made on Discord should be easier to find, not harder.
Anyone that has used chat clients in general would know that searching is not difficult and is generally more user friendly than what we have here.
A big benefit of using platforms like Discord and Reddit is control can easily be transferred and backup of data is handled by the platform.

Quote from Moebius on September 6, 2024, 2:02 amHi tim, thanks for setting up a discord I'd be happy to get an invite link. I'll have to read the link about search; I've been on discords in the past with high volume of good information and found it hard to find stuff; there is just so much to go through. Have you looked at substack?

You're welcome.
Yep Substack is more for a publisher and their followers I think?
I think Discord is a good base to start from, I think group voice calls and text chat is invaluable.
If we then expanded to a Subreddit or similar the Discord chat would prevent people using the Subreddit for chatting.
The invite link will be in your email.
