Increasing Vit D by sunshine.

Page 1 of 2Next

I mentioned in another post that my March vitamin D level was low & that I was going to do an experiment this summer to see if I could raise it to a good level by sunbathing. I’ve just got my 3 month result back & it has doubled from 27 nmol/L to 54 nmol/L (11ng/ml to 22ng/ml). I have not sunbathed in a swimming costume this is just gardening in shorts & tee.

I’ll redo again in 2/3 months. I plan to monitor this now closely for the next couple of years to see how reducing vA affects this.

Wow ! That is great ! How long did you spend in the sun at one time , mine was super low too last November

Thanks Naveen. I haven’t measured how long I’ve been in the sun but I’ve just been out in my garden a lot wearing shorts. I’ve got a nice tan on my legs & arms. The weather has been unusually sunny in the UK so I’ve been out most days. It’s turned rainy at the moment but hopefully the sun will return. I’ve probably overdone the sun a bit tbh as I’m feeling a bit high vA again so the rain is probably a good thing! It’s getting the balance right I guess.

Interesting. Most "experts" will tell you that just exposing your lower legs and arms + face is not enough for vit D.. I had intersting skin changes on my arms from the wrists to fingers. When the sun was stronger I had arms like 90yo grandpa. Skin was crazy dry, flaky and peeling. Now there is no sign of dry skin.. Smith is talking about this in his new interview. So I assume it was vit A detox..

Vitamin A and D both raise calcium in the blood. The body does not want excess calcium so it lowers the D. I'm guessing if you raise the D while still having high A you are going to feel sick from excess calcium, so I would just focus on the A detox and don't worry about it.

My own personal theory is that we should expose our hair/top of head.  I'm not saying I don't expose the rest.  But don't discount what goes in to the top of your head!  Nature is smart that way.  It might even be the reason we have hair, and the oils up there.  Think of the oils coating each strand (creating a large surface area), absorbing the sun, and then it soaking into your skin, slowly, over the next day or so.

Yeah this is like Dr.Smith thinking "don't take rat poison D". I understand that the body is smart and it is possible that it will lower vit D in the blood on purpose. But that doesn't mean you don't need vit D? Like just because your calcium on hair test is high you don't need vit D? To me it doesn't make any sense. I would understand if he says don't take vit D supplements, but make sure you will get some D from the sun or at least sun bed. So the body can self regulate vit D that is making from UVB... But "not worry about vit D" is just crazy. Humans need vit D. Unless he thinks that even vit D is a poison? I wouldn't be surprised at all. He said in last interview that vit C deficiency doesn't exist. That scurvy is actually vit A toxocity LOL..

@jiri

I'm having a laugh at the scurvy comment! It's like Smith is trolling but it's scary because I know he isn't...

Smith is willing to admit when he is wrong though Jiri, so it's all good... LOL

Dr Smith is massively in favour of vitamin D from sunshine. He suggests using lamps if you have no access to sun. He’s only not in favour of  supplements.

I don’t really understand the derogatory tone about Dr Smith as we are all on the same page trying to understand vA toxicity. He has done some fantastic work. No one is going to agree on everything but in a world where virtually no one else believes vA toxicity is a thing I find it sad that we can’t all work together on this important topic.

I've thought about it before, that scurvy and VA toxicity are in an overlapping zone. Perhaps pelegra too.

I haven't taken a supplement for a very long time.  Since BG (before Grant).  I'd already gotten the ick on them.    Vitie C was the last left in my pantry.  Hub's last kidney stone made me drop that one.  Even if the jury is out on whether C supps have an effect on kidney stones, I don't want to go there.

I'm super glad that Dr. Smith exists, and I wish more holistic practitioners would study VA tox.
