Potato diet anyone?

Page 1 of 2Next

4 months ago I started standard vAe diet of mostly beef, some rice, some beans.
Great results for many health problems plus increased mental clarity, but not much weight loss.

So 3 days ago I started the potato diet.
Potatoes extremely low in vA, retinol, etc.
In just three days, surprising weight loss.

Now I'm wondering: is potato diet exponential vAe ... with the goal of vA elimination?
Much too early to say, but I'm impressed so far.

I'm wondering if anyone else here has tried potato diet.
Your results pro or con?

I'm only interested in others who have actually done or are doing the potato diet.
I'm not at all interested in ... and won't respond to ... speculative opinions from those with no experience.

If you are not familiar with the potato diet, but curious, and your searches don't turn up much, I can send links to you by email for reading and watching: LarryBKK@pm.me

We tried the potato diet about 10 years ago but only lasted about 36-48 hours.  We were very hungry all the time.  We didn't need to lose weight but we thought it would help give us a "reset" and just wanted to try it.  We ate peeled and boiled potatoes with only a little salt for flavoring.  And we ate as many as we could per meal.

We (two people) used to eat potatoes at 2 meals per day.  I peeled and cut up 10 pounds every 5 days or so.  I had heard the nightshades can contribute to arthritis many years ago (in the late 70s) but didn't think it affected me.  So after about six years of eating so many potatoes, I decided to quit all nightshades to see if my slightly swollen knees would get better.  And they did.  I do eat some potatoes now but less than once a week.

Thank you, @Eio, for that valuable report.

I especially appreciate your comments about nightshades.
None of the blogs that "promote" the potato diet mention that.

I do think a very high starch / fruit diet is helpful in supercharging the cells to run their processes (including detox).

It breaks reductive stress, it allows sirtuins to work to de-acetylize and unleash cell enzymes, and so on. The lower protein also helps clear BCAA's (which can slow cells down, too). Fire in a Bottle explores many of these topics on his Youtube channel.

It's a freight train, though. I am pretty sure it was a major reason for my sun sensitivities and persistent dizziness as it allowed too much intermediates (and maybe even anhydroretinol / retroretinol...hard to say).

Nowadays, I am adding back sources of fat from egg yolks, coconut oil, and butter (and, I try very hard to source yolks that aren't fed things that turn them orange, and butter not augmented with things like annatto). The reason for these sources is that PUFA (linoleic acid, oleic acid) in sufficient amounts will flip a switch in cells making the situation a train wreck.

Thank you, @shannon, for writing those comments.

Some questions:

How long did you stay on that diet?

If you ate mostly potatoes, did you worry about solanine?
Or not?

For myself, staying consistent with the vAe diet, I do not eat any fruit at all. and no butter or egg yolks either.

Don't know if the comment is appropriate ... I wasn't on a specific potato protocol though.

Thanks for trying, and, no, it's not appropriate.
The thread topic clearly states, "Potato diet".
If you have any suggestion how I could make that any more clear, please tell me.
I prefer this thread doesn't drift off into never-never land.

Ah, solanine, yes?
I am starting to worry about that.

One web site that promotes the potato diet
is run by a man who ate ONLY potatoes for a full year.
He lost over 100 pounds.
That kind of weight loss is appealing.
But the solanine (for one YEAR) is not appealing at all.

So I've been searching for information about solanine counter-measures.
Best information I've found so far:
1. organic potatoes only
2. examine carefully and eliminate any potatoes showing green spots.
3. peel thoroughly.

Another possibility is soak or boil potatoes in charcoal water.
I've used charcoal for par-boiling rice, but not yet for potatoes.

A respectful, but firm, reminder:
This thread topic here is POTATO DIET in the context of vAe (the topic of this forum).
Just that.

It is NOT about high starch, low starch, fruit, vegan, keto, paleo, low protein, pufa, Brad Marshall, or anything else.

The topic here is POTATO DIET and I'm asking for comments only from those who have ACTUALLY done it.
Not interested in theories or opinions from those who haven't.
Plenty of such speculation elsewhere on the Internet.
Don't need more here.

Thank you.

I love potatoes, but they give me joint pain and stiff spine. Last time I had potatoes it was like 150g of cooked potatoes. I woke up and I could not move in the bed basically.. My spine was so stiff and I even had some crazy dream that they were injecting me with something into the spine. Maybe it was biopsy actually. How crazy is that.. So I avoid all nightshades like it's a poison..

Worries me, too.
Are there any counter-measures to nightshade poison?

Answer (maybe): a pressure cooker / Instant Pot

"The Plant Paradox", by Dr. Steven R Gundry MD:
"A pressure cooker will destroy the lectins in beans and other legumes ... as well as in vegetables in the nightshade and squash families ... " (p. 180)

Should potato dieters rush out and buy Instant Pots?
Or not?
