science behind "detox"

Page 1 of 2Next

I've been on the zero VAD diet for about 6 weeks now with my itchy skin and rash getting a little worse.  I've heard others say this is normal "detox" in the first few weeks/months but can someone explain the mechanism?  I don't understand how going zero VAD in the diet will drive retinol/acid out through the skin?

thx

Rob

Dr. Garrett Smith has a video and article on detox posted on his forum.

What do you eat and drink exactly?

Thanks for the link, Bella.   Interesting info.

Rob, thanks for starting the detox topic!

Hi Rob,

Since we are still early into this investigation, I can only speculate as to the mechanism(s) involved. Basically, I think as the body metabolizes and mobilizes fats stored in the adipose tissues it is also inadvertently releasing its stored retinoids. The newly freed retinoids are toxic outside of the RBPs and lipids.

This temporarily places a greater load on the detoxification functions of skin, liver, and possibly the kidneys too. That’s why I think consuming ample amounts of fats is important when taking on a low vitamin A diet.

I hope this helps.

Grant/Bella - thx for the reply.  My diet for the last 6 wks has been beef, rice, millet, white potato, egg whites, ghee, salt, navy beans, white onions, banana, almonds and macadamia nuts.  With the rash, I'm finding it's worse in places where I've tried to keep it moisturized with coconut oil (interesting for VAD transport possibly).  I'm stopping that now and switching to sesame oil.

On the detox mechanism, I don't know why a low VAD diet would mobilize more fat/retinoids than a higher VAD diet...?  Maybe the body is "strong enough" after not getting poisoned by VAD for the past 6 wks...I dunno???  I'll keep going and see how things progress.

Are there any fats you feel might be best? Butter, in spite of the high retinol content?

Hi Harry,

I don't know. I almost exclusively used olive oil in my diet. I did not experiment with butter.

Hmmm, you wrote in your books that you don't use much olive oil (10 grams is almost nothing). Did you increase this amount now?

If you lose the ghee (and possibly the nuts), your symptoms will go as well. Ghee would cover my body with acne in about 3 days.
