UVA destruction rate of VitA

Page 1 of 2Next

Does anyone have a position on destruction rate for Sun/UVA exposure.

I am thinking that it should at least be equivalent UVB creation of VitD. So, 10K IU may destroy 10K IU of VitA. Though, I suspect more is destroyed or damaged to at least retinoic acid (for retinyl esters stored).

But it would be good to have at least a ballpark hour understanding.

Good question. I can only offer an anecdote. When I started my detox journey, my serum retinol levels really spiked during the summer. I was in the sun a lot, away for two weeks, sunbathing nude on the beach. Serum retinol levels jumped from 3.1µmol/L in January to 4.14µmol/L at the end of August.

Good to know.

Anecdotally, I started in November last year and my serum levels also jumped. It's common for the mobilization to occur once the intoxication slows (and detox plumbing/infrastructure increases).

Did you encounter the detox setback period during that time?

There was never really a honeymoon period, so I can't say I had a detox setback. SIBO makes everything a little more complicated. My Achilles heel is sleep, which seems to be disrupted by both bacterial endotoxins and retinoic acid. How about you, have you had any detox setbacks so far? People have mentioned that eggs even that out, and activated charcoal also improves things when it's taff.

I wonder if this has anything to do with turning tan?   We are talking about pigments, and plants use carotenes to help shield themselves from the sun.

I believe I overloaded my liver and sprayed all sorts of carotenoids and retinoids including in my brain, my ears, and such. So, it's been a dance as I've been detoxing since November 2022 (~7 months now).

Anything that speeds detox has negative impacts. BUT, sun exposure does not, and it also seems to make my symptoms better.

Sleep has definitely been a problem. It seems to get better at times, but I still wake-up 5-7 times a night...sometimes with loud tinnitus. Now that I understand VitA toxicity more, it makes a lot of sense....and gives me hope that there will come a day when the bile dumps laden with VitA waiting to be re-absorbed and re-circulated will slow and be gone.

It may, but I think the bigger reason is melanocytes making melanin as a result of the UVA exposure.

Sun seems to make my symptoms worse, especially Neuro ones.

Vitamin D competes with vitamin A so increasing vitamin D at the skin level may mobilize vitamin A into circulation as retinaldehyde. What happens next may be due to how your body can adapt to the sudden change.

That's true, but it equalizes...UVB creates VitD, UVA destroys it. And, the absorption is over a three day period (with the most in the first few hours, of course)

But, interesting experience nevertheless. I do think some of the UVA may oxidize it to Retinoic acid, but UVA waves are not like enzymes...they hit the retinyl ester (or carotenoid) wherever they hit it. Hopefully rendering it harmless.

I wasn't aware that UVA destroyed VitD.
