What happen around the age 21 in a male body ? Seb derm onset

Page 1 of 2Next

What happen around the age 21 in a male (or even female) body ? I've talked with more than 20 people with seb derm and other chronic stuff and they ALL stated that it started around this age (some had some minor dandruff like symptoms during teenage years). ALL OF THEM.

That's crazy. It's exactly what happened to me as well - it slowly spread since then and I had a very mild form of the dandruff/sd (scalp/eyebrows) when I was a teenager, but it started to expand a lot around that age. Just had a chat with my little brother, and that is exactly what is happening to him ! He just turned 21.

Good question. I am male and got it around that age as well. Could be a hormonal thing maybe?

Here people will probably tell you that the reason is that around that age the liver got saturated with vitamin A.

Btw: How is your SD right now? Any progress yet?

Yeah maybe.. Well I've been low vA since July 21 and so far no change at all. I didn't go zero vA tho, but I limite intake under 1000IU per day (often I'm much lower).

What about you ? What is your story with SD and the path of healing it ?

I tried every diet there is I think. No real progress sadly. But I know for sure milk, tomatoes and peppers makes it worse. And for some reason also coconut products. But just avoiding all irritants doesnt heal it for me.

The best results I had with a diet of: lean venison + berries + honey. But never managed to clear it fully with diet. I got worse with white rice + lean beef but not much worse.

I now just use ocean water to wash my face and if I do that 3-4 times a day I am free of symptoms.

Here is my method: https://www.reddit.com/r/SebDerm/comments/rv0xkz/finally_found_a_cheap_easy_solution_to_make_my/

I am not sure if sugar makes it worse. I personally dont think so, since I had the best results so far with a diet really high in raw honey, which is almost like sugar.  But everyone is different.

Also I almost never really had flare ups, it was just there constantly. But if I consume milk I get a big flare up for sure, it even spreads to other areas that havent been affected before.

@max-3 if you do well with honey have you ever looked at secondary porphyria as an issue for you? It just came into my mind as honey is one of the things that switches off an overactive (but faulty) heme pathway. Maybe completely irrelevant for you but it’s the rabbit hole I’m going down at the moment, so thought I’d mention.

In a nutshell, induction of the CYP450 detoxification enzymes causes an up-regulation of the heme pathway (as they are heme based enzymes). This is fine unless any of your heme enzymes (there are 8 of them) are for some reason running slowly. If this is the case the up-regulation causes a build up of one or more of the toxic intermediates, porphyrins. These then cause symptoms. Furthermore, the heme molecule is the negative feedback inhibitor of the pathway and if you aren’t producing it correctly the pathway stays up-regulated. The other thing that turns it off is IV dextrose, and honey is good too.

Steven Rochlitz says that 20% of people have the predisposition to develop secondary porphyria. Dr Klinghart says that pyroluria (also a heme pathway glitch) is the deeper issue and correcting this is the first step. I’m working on understanding this.

No I have never heard of this, but sounds interesting. So what would be the solution then? Consuming sugar every 2 hours or something like that?

I have a theory based on what I noticed on myself. I get drier skin and eyes when I am calorie/ carb restricted. I some day wanna try to go really high carb but I have the problem that I dont tolerate grains well and I am somewhat reluctant to eat large amounts of sugar/honey but maybe this is what I need to do. I think if you really add a lot of honey it doesnt taste good and is too sweet for me and I dont want it. From what I researched though is that you dont want to eat high sugar while eating any added fats.

People with secondary porphyria do well on high carb diets. Knowing what I now know I think the porphyria rabbit hole would be worth you exploring.

Do you find that charcoal helps symptoms? Charcoal is a very good binder for porphyrins.

Toxicity (probably also a strong detox) and stress increase the production of porphyrins as they upregulate the blocked heme pathway.

Anyone who does badly on low carb and well with honey, has anxiety as one of their symptoms, got better on the vA detox and then worse in some way, has a history of reacting badly to supplements/stress etc should really look at secondary porphyria imo. As someone who has genetic pyroluria I know that my heme pathway is not optimal and that has led to me researching this. However, I think it could be highly significant for a number of people.

Never tried charcoal, but I might soon.

I do well with honey in a sense that it doesnt make me worse, but I never managed to cure sebderm on any diet and I have tried them all. But what seems consistant is that I do best symptom-wise on either high carb/ low fat or high fat/low carb. But the problem with that is that both diets are restricting and imbalanced in my opinion. Also I doubt it is healthy to never eat any added fat or to eat hardly any carbs.

@mat not just people 21yo have it.. You need to look at individual case. What is his life style, diet, what he was taking in terms of meds, supps etc.. It's vitamin/mineral imbalance related for sure. In case of 21 yo it could be due to fast hormone changes that will influence minerals/vitamins in the body as well.. I would do hair test and blood test for hormones, iron panel, copper, zinc, ceruloplasmin to see if there is some obvious issue. Especially if the person has a lot of stress, bad diet low in things like zinc, biotin or some toxicity...
