Regarding questions on plasma vs whole blood on uses of blood.
The blood component demand is mostly determined by blood type.
Red cell donations are preferred from O-neg donors as they can be given to any other blood type recipient.
In case of plasma donations the blood type compatibility inverts. AB-pos plasma can be given to any other blood type.
While O-neg recipients can only receive O-neg whole blood, AB-pos recipients can take any other blood type donor's blood.
So O-neg donors are universal donors for whole blood and for red cells.
AB-pos recipients are universal recipients for whole blood and for red cells.
Red cell and whole blood products are used in emergencies, surgeries and for cancer patients.
Plasma is used for burn victims.
Cancer patients and burn victims often go through ALOT of product.
Interesting that donors in the US get paid for plasma and they do not in Canada. Most likely has dramatic effect on quality of product in US.
