Accutane and eyes

I have been reading the forums and really it is wonderful to see I am not alone with the issues and problems from Accutane.  I was raised in a "health food" family and gosh we were the sickest ones on the block!  Anyways, I had severe acne starting when I was 12 off and on.  The kind that causes keloid scars. I also had scalp issues like itching and pulling.  I even went partially bald from all the itching and pulling of my hair!  I still itch the scalp!  Anyways,  maybe Accutane in my 20s wasn't the smartest treatment cause ever since then the eye issues never went away like the doctors said they would.  But it hasn't been all the time.  Back in 2013 I went on a 5 day backpack trip and the food I took was homemade beef jerky.  I also took dehydrated rice, a homemade hamburger rice goulash that was also dehydrated and lots of oats, some whey protein and non fat powder milk and trail mix. (I don't remember if the powder milk had synthetic vitamin A in it or not).  So with lots of water and eating just that I had no eye problems and never had to use eye ointment at night.  At the time I didn't think much of it except I was quite surprised I didn't need the ointment.  So this low vitamin A diet makes sense now.

Another time I had a severe sinus infection and all I did was drink water day and night and little food if any.  No dry eye feeling at all during that time.

I'm now in my 60's and I intend to not give up on this eye condition and this diet sounds easy for me.  I have been considering Garrett Smith to see if the tests and treatment might help too but ever since I tried that Chinese Acupuncture doctor and trying that rainbow diet and ending up nearly crippled overnight I am wary so I am going to experiment with this diet on my own and drink more water and see where it goes for now but if anyone has had success with Garrett Smith let me know.

@Sussan,

I have been doing the diet as per the guidelines and principles of Garrett Smith for 5 months. I did NOT take accutane.  I am just a lifelong "healthy" eater which was dairy heavy in my youth and then paleo and WAPF later on and liver, cod liver oil, supplements, and the rainbow plus powdered plants, etc. etc.  I just wanted to say that I value both Grant's work and Dr. Smith's work.  I have been helped a lot by participating in Smith's Nutrition Restored Mighty Network detox thing.  I paid $60 for the basic membership, and now I have worked through most of that info (the "courses") and so I am now paying $10 per month to have the Advanced Courses.  What is refreshing is that:  1. Some of the hangups have already been discovered, so I have been able to jump in and just do it.  2.  It's livable and doable for me.  I can have SOME foods that might contain a little of A--but I stick to these food lists that Dr. Smith posted.  I would not want to detox any faster than I am, because I do get a little symptoms of the detox process.  I am learning to be more consistent so that I can actually tweak up or down on several key elements.  I also had consultation with Dr. Smith after having blood draw and hair test for minerals.

There are others who will have a more impactful testimony as to how the diet has helped them.  But, I wanted to plug for Dr. Smith's approach which is more practical and doable for me than just beef, beans and rice.  I also wanted to learn more of what will call the "gray area" so that I could communicate to friends and family--because how many people are going to sign on for just beef beans and rice? (God bless Grant!!)
