Alterations to DNA. Any thoughts?
Quote from romaine on April 4, 2019, 8:40 amI think Grant wrote somewhere that if retinoids caused DNA damage then it could take up to 10 years to correct - but I am not sure exactly if this is what he wrote. Does anyone know what he wrote about alterations to DNA? I have been on the diet for awhile and haven't gotten much better but I am sure my issues are from A toxicity. I had been taking lots of A and carotenoids prior to my toxicity symptoms exploding last summer. Just wondering if my very slow progress could be from damaged DNA. My deotox cycles look something like this: 1 or 2 months of bad A toxicity symptoms followed by 1 day or 2 not so bad days. I just read the Gulf War Illness study Smith posted which kind of confirmed that maybe this is what is going on with me. I did not have a ton of vaccines prior to my explosion of symptoms but did get many in the mid 90s when I was in my early 20s though don't think that is what is primarily behind my recent explosion of health issues. Lots of A and carotenoid containing supplements and foods are causing GWI type problems. I read the GWI symptoms list and I have most of them. Maybe those that heal considerably in a few weeks to a few months on the low A diet have no damaged DNA or very little?
BTW: I never took accutane but for a few months in my 20s I used a Rx retin A topical and over the years tried various over the counter retin A products but the last time was a few years ago. No doubt these exposures contribute to my declining health, but it was slow until the A supplements and high carotenoid diet.

Quote from ggenereux on April 4, 2019, 10:33 amHi Romaine,
The very functional definition of vitamin A’s action is for the retinoic acid form of it to bind with DNA and subsequently cause gene “expressions”.
So, depending on a ton of individual variables and factors, it could take a long time to recover from its overdose. Although diet alone is not a quick-fix, it’s the only fix we know of right now. For most people it took many years of slow accumulation to get into the toxic state. Therefore, we should expect it to take a long time to recover; thinking two or more years is not unreasonable.
There are other people sharing their experiences here regarding foods and supplements (such as zinc, vitamin C, and vitamin D,E too) that might help in accelerating one’s recovery. Please apply your own good judgement on it. Obviously, what’s really needed is an antidote.

Quote from romaine on April 4, 2019, 3:32 pmThank you for the reply. It does seem though that for some people that diet alone has been somewhat of a quick fix. I have been low A for 6 months and feel almost as sick and in pain as I did before I started the diet. Except for vitamin D, I have tried those supplements off and on, plus a few more, and haven't noticed any appreciable effects yet.

Quote from Mokus on April 4, 2019, 4:09 pmHi Romaine, On top of detox symptoms we also have a retracing of past symptoms. Sounds like you might be needing more personal guidance regarding supplements to support your detox. I think a consistent magnesium and vitamin C intake is important to start with. The Magnesium I use as an external spray and per body weight. I used to take some internal Mg however seems like I need less now with low VA. Vitamin C I personally like Sodium ascorbate, although Ascorbic acid is OK too. I have personally built up my dosage spread out every 4 hours till reach my bowel tolerance. Sure there may be other supplements that can support you however this is what my start point was. There is also a post about Zeolite as a support for detoxing the VA. I have found this made a big difference after a few weeks of taking it. Although I only started taking it about the 5 months mark.

Quote from romaine on April 4, 2019, 5:07 pmThanks Mokus! Of the supplements I take, vitamin C and magnesium are the 2 I consistently take and have for a few years. I do think they have helped me from getting even sicker but since I took them before, I don't think they are a factor now for getting me better. Hope that makes sense. I have not tried zeolite though- been worried about it actually be toxic in of itself. I am very weary of most supplements now since I think they are a big part of me feeling so bad right now. Is zeolite more about detoxing glyphosate or does it directly detox vitamin A also? I might give it a try. Thanks again for the feedback.

Hi Romaine,
If you haven't already, maybe garrett smith's "nutrition sheet" can be of help? He has updated it with a lot more info, especially the zeolite part where he also recommends certain products he knows are safe and working, that he use himself and on his clients. He also point out the importance of avoiding glyfosate and sticking to organic as much as possible, especially when eating grains. Check out the nutritionrestored.com blog forum for more info on this and all A-related stuff. I think he will update there soon regarding zeolite as well. I, personally, would not touch it without first knowing which and how much, all backed up by science. Which Garrett do.
I am waiting for my zeolite to arrive, will start a thread for it once I am on it. I am in.a bad detox cycle atm, legs are so itchy it feels like they are on fire, and the skin is all powdery and flaky again esp on legs. I dont know what I did to provoke it, if it was dark chocolate or 100% stopping all butter again. Hoping zeolite will help with these cycles.

Quote from Orion on April 5, 2019, 4:07 amStarting 5th month of low A with rice and beef for 3 meals a day on April 1st, before this I was still getting maybe ~150IU carotenoids from low VA fruit, wheat, oats for the first 4 months.
Started using 750mg activated charcoal first thing in the morning, and teaspoon of zeolite before bed on April 1st as well
My skin has gotten really bad this week, which cannot be a coincidence. Garret mentioned in a article that carotenoids are cleared first(my hand and feet are no longer orange), so I suspect I am dumping preformed retins now or the zeolite is helping the purge? Sleep still not improving either.

Thanks Liz,
I do have Dr. Smith's folder from September, and just about everything I eat is organic but maybe that glyphosate is still there in my tissues and causing too many problems for me to feel well yet. I hope your skin gets better soon! I have had my share of itchy skin so I know how bad it feels.
