Banana

A banana has more vitamin A than cheese. almost 300 iu garet smith is taking 1200 iu of vitamin a daily. And his vitamin a keeps going down, does anyone know why? Smith eats 4 bananas a day

I’m sorry but banana does not have that much beta-carotene. Just open one up now and look at the colour, pretty much white.

Even if it somehow did- I’ve said this before but you can’t compare foods that are high in beta-carotene to foods that are high in retinol, especially at a 1:1 ratio.

80% of preformed retinol is absorbed into the body when consumed. 100% of that stays as retinol.

3% of beta-carotene is absorbed into the body when consumed. Only 5% of the 3% BC that is absorbed is converted to retinol.

Overall that’s 0.15% of dietary beta-carotene that turns to retinol in the body.

Right there you’re roughly looking at a potential 1:500 ratio when comparing the accumulation of retinol from foods with pre-formed retinol vs beta-carotene.

I think there's a mistake somewhere. Seems out by a factor of 10. 8 Banana fruit Nutrition Facts and Health Benefits (nutrition-and-you.com)

I don't fear bananas but I do fear peaches 😉

@lil-chick Definitely need a laughter emoji for some of your comments. I do eat peaches now if that's any help to allay your fear. Apricots and mangoes are much higher in the carotenoids.

@tommy

I found your statement regarding the percentages of absorption very interesting. What is the source for these percentages if you don't mind me asking? Also I was wondering about the combinatoon fat and beta-carotene, can 3% absorption still be said for that case?

I also wonder how genetic differences factor in these numbers?

@nocarrotsforme

Wasn’t able to find the source where I got 3% from so you’ll have to forgive me, I did however find this which says 10% absorption- still very very small.

Beta Carotene Absorption

Genetic factors may play a big role for sure.

Also I’m assuming consumption of beta carotene with fat would significantly bump up absorption so definitely an important variable to consider I think.
