Black beans as good as kidney beans?
Quote from Paola on February 10, 2022, 4:21 pmHi VA gang,
I noticed that Grant mentioned in one of his books kidney beans as the type of beans he was eating. But now I believe black beans are recommended as the to-go-bean for the low VA diet. According to eatthismuch.com both types have zero VA content. If that's the case, why the pivot towards black beans instead of kidney beans, or are both still acceptable?

Quote from mmb3664 on February 11, 2022, 9:34 amAs long as you tolerate them, I think they are both acceptable. I believe both have some small amount of vA, but I imagine that the amount in either type of bean is not enough to be of concern. I personally eat cowpeas (black eyed peas), lentils, and pinto beans as my main legumes, but include black beans from time to time. Black beans are supposedly a lot higher in oxalates than the other legumes I normally eat and I become sensitive to oxalates in large amounts. I do not like kidney beans, so I do not eat them.
Not sure if that is helpful, but in general, I think it depends on how you react to them; I can't imagine the vA content in either is an issue.
