Blue palms (low blood oxygen?)

I’ve been on a low va diet since January of this year. The main improvements I’ve noticed have been improved mental clarity, improved nail growth, and a lessening of the orange tint in my skin. 
However, I have noticed that my palms have occasionally become blue. They did not do this before, when I was eating a dairy-heavy Ray Peat inspired diet. I’ve read online that blue palms can be caused by poor circulation. According to Ray Peat, blue palms are a sign of an unfavorable estrogen ratio. 
Has anyone else experienced this since going on a low va diet? What could this mean?

I have been eating beef, chicken, white rice, occasionally olive and coconut oil, apple juice, lentils, black beans, lemonade, peeled apples, sometimes coffee.

I’m sorry about the poor circulation. I don’t know much about that, and haven’t experienced it, but maybe someone else will know.

You might want to watch out for the pasteurized, shelf-stable apple juice. It can contain methanol, which slows down the detox (fresh apple juice, fresh apples, fresh apple sauce, fresh juice are all fine). I did eat jam (all canned jams contain methanol) for part of my detox, but I avoid doing that now (instead I have honey or something).

The only other thing I can think of is that white rice doesn’t contain the B vitamins. I ate a lot of white rice for the first while on the detox (it’s cheaper and more easily available), but I’ve been switching over to brown rice and whole grains and I think it does make a positive difference. If you’re not supplementing B1 (thiamin) and B2 (riboflavin) it is important to get those from whole grains (they help the detox work, and will be “used up” in the process of getting rid of the vitamin A).

Oh also, you might not have much vitamin E in that diet if you’re not eating nuts. I use sunflower seeds for that (they are also super high in thiamin), but if you were into Peat maybe you don’t like the PUFAs. Dr. Smith suggests supplementing with vitamin E, because most people don’t get enough in their diet. He explains how to do this here: https://youtu.be/DOXvxOqmlzg?t=4386

It’s good you’re eating beans and lentils (Karen Hurd’s youtube videos about bile explain how the soluble fibre in them helps to bind and remove the fat soluble waste—including vitamin A—in the digestive tract). The legumes have been really key for me! 

I hope you continue to see improvements, and that you figure out what is going on with the blue palms!

Apple juice is horrible for the liver... After Ray Peat diet heavy in fructose. I would definitely avoid it for some time... Eating some bananas is ok, but drinking apple juice is a bad idea..

Thank you so much! What kind of whole grains have you been eating that work for you? I think that’s something I’d like to incorporate as well.

Organic 100% whole wheat or whole rye breads are great, too. If you’re in the USA or Canada, there’s Ezekiel Bread, Dimpflmeier’s, and a few other organic brands (often they are located in the frozen section to keep them fresh). In Canada, PC Organics has a pretty good 100% whole wheat sandwich bread. My husband and I like baking bread, too (no-knead recipes make it easier).

I love whole gain porridge (any one grain or a combination of several—all are delicious). I think Bob’s Red Mill sells a variety of organic porridge mixes. But I grew up on porridge, so it’s a comfort food! Not everyone agrees, haha. xD

People who are avoiding gluten on this diet eat quinoa, millet, buckwheat, oatmeal, and other gluten-free grains.

Most whole grains are pretty low in VA, except for yellow corn. White and blue corn are fine, though. I use white corn masa harina and tolerate it well.

Hope that gives you some ideas of possibilities to try. 🙂

Good video about arsenic in rice. I was eating so much rice during my bodybuilding days.. I am done with brown rice for sure and will eat only white basmati rice max once a day.. I would try his cooking method in more water...
