Bodybuilders and Liver Tablets
Quote from ajk on August 21, 2019, 2:54 pmHey Guys,
I was just wondering about how golden era bodybuilders used to have diets made mostly of milk, meat, eggs, and would supplement liver tablets. Tom Platz used to pop 75 liver tablets in a day. And many are still alive and well. I just don't understand how that's possible. Does anyone have any insight into this?
Thanks.

He was doing blenders full of eggs. (this is the juvenile onset, auto-immune type). We share DNA, so I'm thinking his ability to deal with VA isn't good either, and goofed up some of his final growth there as a teen.
Have you ever heard of this guy? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Louis_Cyr ? He died of kidney disease at about 50, and actually always looked fleshy, but the strong-men often are.
I'm not a spring chicken, and I've always done way too much vitamin A. I'm 56 and still not dead yet. 🙂 In fact, I almost wonder if there are SOME benefits to high VA. Over-active immune system... probably does something for you... It's still not a body in balance though. I'm not on team zero, but I'm glad they exist. I'm on team "need a bit".
I suppose that some people have huge burn-rates or tolerances... while others don't...

Quote from tim on August 21, 2019, 5:54 pmI saw a diet analysis for Robert Oberst and he was consuming about 40,000 IU Vitamin A a day (carotenoids included) from memory.
He eats up to 20,000 calories per day and is getting large amounts of every other micronutrient including zinc.

Quote from who_am_i on August 21, 2019, 11:02 pmMy guess is that their high meat diets provide some kind of protection since they get all the co-factors and minerals essentially masking their toxicity. Growth hormones also tend to increase the size of organs, which in return would give them a bigger liver storage capacity. Since bodybuilders are so big, they can by definition store more vitamin A in their tissues and fats too. Most of them are physically active for decades non stop, I am sure this helps.
I also think you can only become famous in muscle building if you have the right genes, so most of these guys were probably blessed with a robust and healthy system to begin with.

Quote from Tropico on August 22, 2019, 2:28 amThe bodybuilder's classic diet (pre internet era) is rice with chicken breast, usually ate only egg white, some liver tablet is defatted with no/low vitamin A.

Bodybuilding was a thing long before the cholesterol hysteria, they used to eat whole eggs. That diet sounds more recent maybe like 80s or 90s.
