Breast feeding reduces breast cancer risk.... because of retinol detox?

Page 1 of 2Next

I came across this today which contains a few studies https://www.parents.com/baby/all-about-babies/breastfeeding-baby-may-help-you-beat-breast-cancer/

I cant say whether breastfeeding is causative or just correlative. However, I immediately thought of Grants breast cancer book linking it to retinoids. And if it IS causative, the most obvious mechanism would be the mother detoxifying her retinol stores by releasing it through breast milk... into the poor baby.

Over a period of a year of breastfeeding, that is literally hundreds of liters of milk. Assuming similar quantities of retinol as cows milk, thats 1000-2000 IU the mother is detoxifying every day.

Its been a while since I read the breast cancer book. Was this mentioned at all? Anyone have any thoughts?

I find it interesting that when I am nursing I would get mastitis a lot! That was when I was on a high vitamin a diet. Looking to get pregnant again so wondering how it will go.

I certainly felt better while breastfeeding. I don't know if it's retinol though. There are many things that changes within the body during breastfeeding.

But, if I think further, my mild depression was persisting (I had yet to identify this as depression though). I was also probably making a lot of mistakes since I wasn't really into health at the time.

So I have been thinking about this subject-breastfeeding and Vit A and came across the below article, Breastfeeding, rerinoids, and postpartum depression:A new theory; which is just fascinating.  I'm not sure if it's been shared before as some of it sounded familiar, but it sure sounds like.these.researchers are pretty familiar and convinced of the.implications of even slight Vit A overdose.

Anyway, I was thinking about breastfeeding and Vit A detox and how going on this diet while breastfeeding could be very detrimental for the baby while breastfeeding.  (This does stem from the Facebook group discussion, I just don't think it would be well received or discussed there.)

Readin g this article and seeing how much a baby already receives from breastmilk, and then if the theory is correct that the body starts to release Vit A stores when you stop eating it- you could poison a baby really quickly!  I could see how putting the body back into store mode would probably be best for baby; maybe just getting rid of big offenders but not a total deplete diet.  Also, if you don't breastfeed, reducing Vit A would be highly advised!

Hi Curious Observer

I couldn’t get link to work but googled the topic - it’s very interesting. I have a theory that my Mum passed her vA toxicity to me & I passed to to my daughter through breast feeding. In the UK in the 1940s children were supplemented with cod liver oil & I suspect that this is where the toxicity started. It could be that we are a family with a genetic predisposition to vA toxicity but I think that this offers a clearer explanation (or maybe it’s both).  My plan is to make sure my daughter has less vA in her system before she has a baby. If she would take my advice it would be easier!! I have got her to stop eating sweet potatoes all the time so that is a result.

I see that's another brilliant Anthony Mawson paper. At Science Direct they show an outline including a section on Mastitis.

I ran across this yesterday at Wiki while looking into the fortification/intervention subject. It surprised me to read it, but maybe it's recommended to make sure mothers aren't in detox during pregnancy?

World Health Organization recommendation on Maternal Supplementation During Pregnancy states that "health benefits are expected for the mother and her developing fetus with little risk of detriment to either, from a daily supplement not exceeding 10,000 IU [preformed] vitamin A (3000 μg RE) at any time during pregnancy."[9] Preformed Vitamin A refers to retinyl palmitate and retinyl acetate.

The fact that the upper-limit of the recommendation is over 3-times the RDA for an adult man is curious.

I think my mother passed VA toxicity on me and heavy metals, copper too, she loved RAW goose liver. She went to the market every weekend and never bought fruits or vegetables, just goose liver - I have never seen a person in my life who has eaten a raw liver with such an appetite.  For me the liver was always disgusting, I could only eat backed chicken liver with onions. And the second food she loved was chocolate - high copper and the liver is high copper too. And all her life she had health problems, fatigue, depressions.

" The in utero transfer of significant amounts of excess copper to the fetus may also account for the dramatic increase in the number of babies being born with jaundice today. The excess copper is stored primarily in the liver and in the brain. The liver storage can be contributing to the increasing incident rates of jaundice in newborn babies. The brain storage can be contributing to the increasing incident rates of learning and attention deficit disorder."

One germany doctor said, Dr. Max Daunderer - heavy metals expert that pregnancy is the "best detox cure" for a mother. Because much of the toxins pass from mother to baby and the first-born children are most ill.

From the study, hillcountry posted:

"Consistent with this hypothesis, it is estimated that an amount of vitamin A is transferred from mother to infant during the first six months of exclusive breastfeeding equivalent to 76% of a dose known to cause acute vitamin A poisoning in an adult."

And if a newborn gets such a mix of toxins - VA, heavy metals, copper, no wonder today's children are so ill, their detoxification capacities have been weakened since birth.

And my mother told me she breastfeeded me for two years! Sometimes I think I saved her from serious toxicity problems... We had one mother on the mercury forum, she was very toxic and and she told us how fantastically she felt for a few months after giving birth of her daughter...But her daughter started to have serious health problems and then both were chelating heavy metals. This should not happen and mothers should be detoxified before conception, otherwise vicious cycle of toxicity continues from generation to generation.

@bludicka I totally agree. I went to a talk by an environmental toxicologist in UK who said exactly the same thing. The first child gets the worse toxin dump. The second gets off a bit more lightly as long as the gap between pregnancies isn’t too large. We evolved in a clean world so toxicity wasn’t such an issue. As I’m the second child I probably did get off more lightly. My sister was a sickly child & now has chronic fatigue. However, I’m the one with the daughter as she has sons so I think that is more of a worry.

My family shows the opposite, for whatever reason.  (each successive child got auto-immune earlier than the one before it)

Now Price might say that a modern mother's nutritional status degrades with each pregnancy and is not replaced.

At some point mom took a VA drug for acne-- unknown when or how much.

Could be that mom just got more and more toxic.  I do agree that it is handed down.
