Quote from Chris13 on September 29, 2021, 11:16 amHello everyone,
I want to log my progress and my short story , if that's ok. I am coming from Ray Peat diet. Been following Ray's diet and work for last 6 years. I now have to come to terms that I am not doing the best I can be on that diet. I was doing Organic Raw Whole Milk, and lots of cheese, enchiladas, Organic OJ. My vision tended to get blurry, especially driving at night, my looks have been not up to par, my weight is going up, my eczema patch on my right ankle gets swollen and painful and never getting healing.
I found Grant's works 2 years ago, and tried it. Instant results. Vision gets more crisp, mental clarity is remarkable, facial bloat gone, and looks are better. Sleep is sound, and wakefulness is outstanding. However, I then , keep reading Ray Peat, listening to his latest interviews, and veer back to his diet. Starting early this week, I have made a commitment to stay on the Low Vit A diet, until I can know for sure that this diet can heal my right ankle eczema patch. Its the size of a baseball, and is plaqued, scabbed, and bleeds when scratched. Already, my facial bloat is going down, my mental clarity is coming back, and my eczema patch is not sore and throbbing.
Im in my 40's, work as a RN in ER and a College. I have used Retin-A at age 17, used some Isotretinoin cream for hair growth at 23, eaten lots of Cod Liver oil, and real Cod livers in an attempt to be "Super Healthy", and probably use supplements containing Vit A Palimate, along with all the Ray Peat foods.
I like to feel great and energetic everyday. I like to drink beer, and eat well. My low Vit A diet includes : Filet Mignon, fresh ground beef, Organic Jasmine Rice, scallops , lobster, Organic pure Coconut water, Organic Gala Peeled Apples, Raisins, and white Potatoes. I need to also lower my Cholesterol, now is 230, Goal is 170. Lower liver enzymes, and get leaner. My body must be Vit A toxic. For instance, several months ago in Las Vegas, one morning I had a hankering for a cheese omelet . I went down to a Mexican restaurant and had myself 2 of the best cheese omelets al carte. For the rest of the day and night, I was so drowsy, blurred vision, and red eyes. Ruined the rest of the weekend.
I use a Pure powder B1,,B2, B3, and dabble with thyroid. Ray Peat even stated that T3 or thyroid "uses up" Vit A. Also, as everyone knows , Strong light or tanning beds can destroy Vit A. So I think those things can help with Detox. That's all for now, Thank you.

Quote from Jiří on October 1, 2021, 10:19 pm6 years on dairy and orange juice? I think that you are deficient in a lot of minerals like zinc, selenium, molybdenum, manganese.. Also for detox you need soluble fiber. Try oats. Great source of manganese and beta glucan. Which is much better type of soluble fiber than pectin from fruits.. I would also take zinc in chelated form. Like 30mg every other day at night with dinner..

Quote from salt on October 2, 2021, 10:19 pmLobster and other red shellfish have a lot of astaxanthin, which is a novel carotenoid that makes those foods red. I'm unsure about the VA content of scallops.
I don't think oats is a good choice as it has a lot of lutein. If you you're convinced that you need to reach some specific level of fiber intake you might want to know that potatoes have almost as much fiber as oats anyways.

Quote from Jiří on October 3, 2021, 2:06 am@salt potatoes for sure don't have beta glucan and for sure are not effective source of fiber. Mushrooms are next best choice after oats.. But I really don't understand this phobia.. Oats really will not give you any issues in terms of vit A detox let alone vit A toxicity. You would have to eat 1kg of oats a day. Nobody is eating that much.. You really want avoid for the rest of your life even foods that have just some lutein? I mean avoiding things like liver, carrots etc.. I understand, but this phobia omg that lutein in one cup of oats will kill me is really pathetic..

Quote from tim on October 3, 2021, 6:22 amNon pro vitamin A carotenoid sensitivity is a very different issue from Hypervitaminosis A. Advising extreme non pro vitamin A carotenoid avoidance as a universally applicable dietary injunction is like advising universal avoidance of any food that can cause allergic reactions in a minority of people. For most the toxicity of non pro vitamin A carotenoids appears to be low. I personally think it's a good idea to minimize their consumption but not to any extreme degree.

Basically all the original studies that showed how good fiber is for you were done with potatoes and potato fiber, not harsh whole grains.
It's not phobia, I bet you have no experimental experience with this, you're basically just regurgitating whatever sounds good you, you haven't even tried a super low VA way of eating yet you feel like you're an authority on the subject. Oats is definitely not a low carotenoid food when it has +200 mcg of carotenoids per 100g. Grant himself reacted badly when he mistakenly took a supplement with lutein in it so it's not some kind of absurd idea that people react to non-VA carotenoids. Also keep in mind that the guy who made the website has eaten mainly just 3 foods for over 5 years so if you're so worried about restrictive dieting you might be in the wrong place.

Quote from Даниил on October 3, 2021, 1:05 pmIn defense of Salt, I would like to say that milk does not contain much vitamin A (~300 mcg per LITER). And this is one of the reasons why I didn't believe in this diet at first. I didn't believe it was possible to react to such low amounts of VA or anything. I think half a kilo of oats will have a lot more carotenoids.
Although I admit that lutein will cause less problems for someone than retinol, and vice versa.

Quote from Jiří on October 4, 2021, 8:50 am@salt I was full year on nothing but white rice, buckwheat, ground beef and whey protein. That was under 400iu of vit A for sure.. I have that main detox behind me. Now I just don't eat obvious sources of vit A, but I am not stressing about some lutein in oats, bananas etc..

Quote from lil chick on October 4, 2021, 9:05 amCould we review a bit the symptoms associated with lutein? Was it eyes? Just so that I can look for it. We eat about 1/3 of a cup of oats about 3-5 times a week. I seem to miss the "cleanse" of it if it isn't there. But maybe I should look for the symptoms and see if I'm having them.
