Quote from Deere on June 28, 2019, 9:50 amThank you all for sharing your experiences here! My husband has had severe asthma, chronic sinusitis, and nasal polyps since about 11 years ago. We’ve tried a number of different things over the years, and about March I was search again and prayed that God would guide me through the mess of all the information and opinions out there to the right path. When I read Grant’s information, I thought, “This is the first theory that actually makes sense.” It explains “why” these disease progress as they do. Why is the gut leaky? Why do these foods become problematic? Why does the list of inflammatory conditions get longer?
He returned to Mayo last week. Last time we saw the doctor, he told us my husband was one of his worst three patients. This time he asked why he was there! His nitric oxide test had gone from 64 two years ago to 21 this time. Normal is under 15; above 53 indicates the asthma isn’t controlled. And this spring has been pretty hard as far as allergens, so I’m very encouraged! I expected some improvement, as he had been able to skip a day of treatments (he normally does it twice a day) on a Saturday while working outside, which he hadn’t been able to do for quite a while. But I was really surprised by the level of improvement! We reduced the dosage of prednisone today, with hopes of getting off that first and then reducing the need for inhalers.
His list of aliments included:
Severe asthma (see above)
Sinusitus (under control with saline rinses)
Nasal polyps (surgery 3 years ago; dr noted some blockages developing, but no polyps)
Restless Legs (had been at bay, but flared this week)
Back acne (first thing I noticed improving)
Ear blockages (his hearing goes from normal to can’t hear at all and back again—still figuring this one out, but eliminating oats this week seemed to make an immediate change for the better)
Bowel problems (improving, but variable—bloating, as well). Taking 12 g of vitamin C and a supplement from the functional medicine chiropractor he is seeing seems to help.
Old man breath (comes & goes)
Memory issues (he hasn’t complained about this in a while)
Fatigue
Sleep (still not great)
Osteopenia
Again, thank you for sharing your journeys! It gave me the confidence and practical tools to proceed!

Quote from lil chick on June 28, 2019, 10:23 amHello Deere! I'm so happy for you both. I hope that I can interest my husband in delving lower in his vit A. Was it hard to convince him to try? 🙂
A loved one of mine had lots of trouble with asthma and then moved from the north to a sunny clime and he seems to be naturally better there. His interests have him out in the sun a lot.

Quote from Deere on June 28, 2019, 11:43 amThis wasn't the worst diet I have had him try! Actually, he has commented that he's not sure what I've changed this time. (It was mostly getting rid of the vegetables, eggs, and a detox supplement he was taking.) He was already gluten, dairy, corn, nut, fish, free. No one in the family has complained any more than they usually do!

Quote from DWL on June 28, 2019, 1:08 pmDeere, it's good to hear about your success!
The reduction of your husband's nitric oxide level is very interesting! Thanks for sharing the detailed NO information. What proteins does he eat? I'm guessing that he's not eating a low protein diet.
I read your post to my husband. He follows a low Vitamin A diet, but doesn't see the need to give up his hot sauce, cheese and guacamole! Maybe your comment about hearing fluctuations will strike a note!
Thanks for sharing on the forum.
All the best,
DWL

So if i understand correctly your husband has experienced that improvement after only 3 or so months on a low vitamin A diet? That's phenomenal!

Actually, he would be more of a purist than I; it's just a harder theory to pitch, since "everyone" knows veggies are good for you! And yes, his protein (chicken & beef, recently egg whites) has been pretty high. Do you think that helps things detox faster?
Josh: I can't say that all of that was in three months. It was over a two year period, and I'm not sure what his NO level was at the beginning of the three months. Regardless, it was the lowest level by far that we have ever seen. And, yes, he has only been three months on the diet.
