depression era "water pie"

For those of us who have ever said they think WATER is about the only thing they don't react to... 🙂

Actually though, looks kind of yummy!

I suppose you'd have to substitute some other oil for the butter.

That recipe is a lot like the butter tarts my mother and grandmother made.  I will ask my sister to send it to me.  I don’t eat wheat so I never asked for it. I think the butter is probably important for the flavor.  Coconut oil might work.

@lil-chick Haha, thanks for sharing the recipe! I tried it out a few days ago—substituting some of the sugar for sucanut to give it a bit more flavour, and adding a layer of pecans. For the oil on top I used a cooking blend (coconut, avocado, safflower). I made a vegan crust (used mostly coconut oil, but substituted 1/4 with sunflower oil):

I really liked it. It wasn’t as sweet or rich as most pies. But it’d probably be even better with butter. 😝 Did you give it a go?

@puddleduck, your dessert sounds very similar to a pecan pie.  I love that around thanksgiving.

No, I haven't tried this yet!    I was thinking that my tastes for sweets has gotten somewhat less.

Mine too, actually! I made the pie in an effort to play calorie-catch-up after a dental problem reduced my ability to eat enough for a little while, and it was just the thing! However, funnily enough, one morning when I was eating pie for breakfast I found myself craving beans. I never thought I’d ever think of a bland, healthful food like beans while enjoying pie! 😝 Maybe my body was like “excuuuuuuse me? You need thiamine to process all that sugar, please and thank you.” The things that happen while low VA... 😂

I should say, though, that I seem to want just a bit of sweet at every meal.  But not a ton-load.
