diet advice
Quote from nicopickle on April 18, 2021, 9:51 amHello everyone. I recently started the low VA diet. I just have a few question to those who have lots of experience with this. I've been vegetarian my entire life and took accutane for ~3 months at 60mg/day until I started feeling off. I've always been pretty bad at getting a lot of protein intake, but have been noticing it is a huge deal for the detox process. Does anyone have any protein supplement advice? I've just started eating rice protein because everything else seems to be capable of slowing the detox process. Also I used to eat a bunch of yogurt, and cheese. I'm wondering if anyone could give me some potential probiotic options. I remember taking antibiotics years ago and feel like my gut health isn't optimal. I'm not sure if I could be already seeing detox symptoms, but have noticed myself getting mad over the smallest things. Also over the past couple years I've been drinking excessive amounts of water, and I'm just finding out too much water can slow the detox process as well. Apologies for the long post, if you have any advice for me please let me know.

Quote from Jiří on April 18, 2021, 12:24 pmWhat you need is meat. Beef, pork, poultry. At least 300g a day and I would start taking zinc 15mg at night and lower dose B vitamin with active forms. You as vegetarian have zinc/copper imbalance for sure. Some whole eggs are ok, but I would be careful with dairy..
edit now I realize I don't know if you want to stay vegetarian? I wonder why? It's so imbalanced diet.. Well at least take zinc like I said and taurine is also good idea. But there is much more stuff in animals that you will miss..

Quote from nicopickle on April 18, 2021, 3:15 pmI don't have any plans on eating meat. I do take zinc supplements occasionally, but I will get some taurine.

Nobodies really figured out the optimal diet for VA detox, Grant has written pretty extensively about his diet and he's had the most success out of anyone here, but he eats a lot of meat. Dr. Garret Smith has a program for VA detox that he is actively developing, I haven't looked into it myself so I can't speak for it
There's a general consensus here that a high protein diet with optional b-vitamin/electrolyte/mineral supplementation is the way to go. I think a low VA diet will be hard as a vegetarian, not because of not eating meat but because of having to avoid most vegetables, what have you been eating since starting a low VA diet?
Welcome

thank you for the response Kurtis!
Its only been about 4 days now, but my diet has consisted of potatoes, kidney beans, avocado, sourdough bread, butter, ~30g rice protein daily, oatmeal, bananas, just started drinking a little coffee. I also take B7, B9, B12, selenium, zinc, copper. I want to find a great source of probiotic. I plan on getting the rest of the B supplements soon, I'm sure that I probably have deficiencies in the ones that come from meat.

Be careful about arsenic from the protein powder, if it comes from a vendor that's worth their salt it will come with a certificate of analysis with measurements of heavy metals like arsenic which can be a worry with rice products. Whey protein is an option, Grant has written about casein protein being toxic, I don't know much about either though so I can't speak too much on them or plant based alternatives
Water kefir shouldn't contain any VA unless it's been flavoured with high VA fruit, I come from the Ray Peat crowd so to me probiotics are no good
A common theme when starting the diet is for symptoms to get worse on a timescale of a few weeks, then get better, things then continue to improve for a while before many people reporting hitting a "detox setback" where symptoms seem to stagnate, keeping a log is a good way for other people to see how your approach is panning out as there is still a lot to be discovered and is greatly appreciated

Quote from nicopickle on April 18, 2021, 8:20 pmAppreciate all the help Kurtis! this is the rice protein that I have: https://www.prairienaturals.ca/products/organic-rice-protein/
I'm going to look into water kefir, seems interesting.
I'll be sure to start making a log because I know that I'll forget about certain symptoms

If you eat dairy why you don't take whey protein which is by far the best type of protein powder? Whey has basically no vit A and it's night and day difference in terms of bioavailability and amino acid composition in comparison with rice protein..

I guess I just made the assumption that whey was associated with dairy, and dairy was a no go for the low VA diet. I'll get on some whey protein, Thank you

I'll get on some whey protein, Thank youMost of the vit A is in milk fat and or caseine people here think. But whey has basically none.. I take whey protein all the time. Don't take big dose at once. Take like 30g 2-3 times a day. So you have amino acids available all the time.
