Well this diet is low in fats. So you should add some fats for sure. Like some olive oil to your rice and you can also make some homemade cookies, pancakes or what you like or you can just buy some "junk food" if you don't want cook it all the time. Even dark chocolate is not bad at all. 100g 50-70% chocolate bar and you have another 500-600kcal.. I like to eat gluten free cookies and instead of milk I drink whey protein.. 😀

You can try drinking some of your calories? I like coconut water. It is not very calorically dense, but replacing some of your plain water with coconut water could help add a couple hundred calories. You can also try some low vA fruit juices if you are up to it. Dried fruits that are low in vA are also an option.

If not, depending on how many beans you are consuming, you can try replacing a bit of the beans with rice since the beans are more filling. Adding fat can help, but I wouldn't add excessive amounts of fat. Maybe 1 Tbsp, but that only gives about 120 calories.

@mmb3664 heh coconut water is maybe the most expensive calorie vs cost.. Coconut water is great for electrolytes not for calories. Fruit juices are full of fructose which is highly problematic. If you try consume lets say extra 500-1000kcal from fruit juices you can easily end up with fatty liver over time.. Btw you think that people should eat max or "maybe" only 1 TBSP of some added fat to very low fat diet? Do you realize that you can end up with really bad bile flow and production, because when bile is not needed that old bile will just stay in bile ducts and gallbladder and become more and more sluggish, thick and how you want to detox something from the body=liver if the main detox pathway is through bile excreted with the stool out of the body?

@jiri I agree coconut water is expensive in terms of calories per $, but the OP did not say anything about cost, so I figured I would mention it. Also, I never suggested consuming 500 - 1000 calories from fruit juice. My assumption was not that whatever recommendations we made would try to cover the full caloric deficit. I was thinking of adding 1-2 cups of fruit juice daily which would be more like 300 calories.

In my mind, "added fat" is basically oils (olive, coconut, canola, etc.), so yes, I would suggest limiting that to 1 Tbsp per day. That does not mean I think people should eat low fat. In my mind, if you want to increase fat intake, it is best done by eating fatty foods, not adding oils. For example, fattier cuts of meat, macadamia nuts, toasted coconut, dark chocolate (which you mentioned) are all higher fat foods that can be used to increase fat intake, assuming they do not cause the person issues. I still stand by not having excessive amounts of fat in the diet though. I think more than 30-35% of calories is not necessary.

Hi @r-2,

Grant has spoken about how his diet has worked out to be sort of low calorie, and so if you are going to replicate it, there might not be a way to make it higher except to eat more of it.    If you can't bring yourself to do it, it could be that you are bored with it.  And then you might want to add something else different, but stay with the spirit of the thing.

I also seem to be a person with high metabolism.  I'm trying right now to stick to 3 meals a day (rather than my usual grazing).  I find that my metabolism is super strong in the MORNING, and so what I have done is adjust lunch to be slightly earlier.    I'm RAVENOUS by 11:00 am.

I think that the square meal that we have been handed down to us Europeans is probably a pretty good idea for almost all of us, and that would mean carbs, fats, proteins at each meal.    Roast beef is awfully lean, I kind of like the idea of trying a somewhat fattier meat.

I think a common way to pad out a diet, in the olden days, was carbs like bread.

@mmb3664 1000 ml of coconut water has 190kcal. If someone wants to eat more calories than mentioning coconut water really doesn't make any sense I am sorry... Also why you think people shouldn't eat more than 14g(1tbsp) of added fats from good oils like olive, coconut.. Especially if their low vit A diet is very low in fat? A lot of people have a problem eating really fatty cuts of meat. It's really hard to digest. But if you add some olive oil to your low fat rice, beef meal. Most people don't even feel that added fat..

@jiri I just think it's better to get more fat from foods that have additional nutrients rather than oil, which is typically empty of nutrients. That's all. If fat is hard for someone to digest, I don't think it matters if the fat comes from food or oil. If digestion is an issue, that's a different topic.

And adding 190 calories is still adding calories, so I do not see how suggesting coconut water does not make sense? I have no clue how much of a caloric deficit the OP is in. If it is 500 calories, then adding 190 calories provides ~40% of what they are missing. If they are missing 1,000 calories, that is still ~20% of what they are missing.

Why do you seem to have a rebuttal to almost everything I contribute to the forum? I just wanted to provide suggestions and now I have to spend extra time providing justification for almost everything I write to you and you are not even the one asking for suggestions.

@mmb3664 It's 190kcal IF you drink 1L of it. 🙂 Nobody is drinking 1L of something every day to get just 190kcal.. Especially if it's expensive.. Btw fatty meat is hard to digest because digestion of meat starts in the stomach, but fat is digested after it comes out of the stomach. That's why that fat basically inhibits/slows down a lot digestion of that meat...

I find it easy to eat a lot of potatoes if I salt it just as much as I like, and add a low or zero VA fat that you tolerate well. Put sugar in your coffee if you drink any.
