Glucaric acid, do we need plant foods to detox?

Dr. Smith recently made an appearance on a podcast. Vitamin A talk starts at about 45 min, very interesting discussion.

At around 1:00:00 he briefly speaks about how people doing the carnivore diet, although getting relief from their symptoms, are not getting rid of their VA stores and are thus seeing their symptoms reappear once they stop their diet, an observation I absolutely agree with. He thinks that a plant compound, glucarid acid, might be needed for detoxification. Glucaric acid apparently is found in some fruits like apples, pears or grapes as well as in cruciferous vegetables. I also saw the user Vinero of the raypeatforum mentioning glucaric acid one week ago, so I am curious if anybody here has an opinion on this. Is this the reason some people are getting these detox cycles whereas other who mainly rely on starch + muscle meat are getting a smoother but slower depletion?

Great post WhoAmI!  Well, I guess that is a vote for apple cider vinegar

I have been eating about 1 apple and drinking apple juice each day since September when I started the low A diet.  For the most part I have not had relief - maybe a day or 2 here or there, except very recently.  My main problems are bad chronic headaches, fatigue and insomnia.  I did eat somethings such as oats and black eyed peas which I shouldn't have because of the type of carotenoids in them and I think that slowed my progress.   Since Friday I have felt almost normal (5 days in a row!) and have slept well so maybe I am finally getting somewhere.    I have not felt worse than before I started the diet, I want to make that clear.   I felt horrible before the diet so didn't have much to lose.   Some things that made me feel worse because I think they were detoxing me were sun exposure and garlic.  I will stick with eating apples and drinking apple juice.

There are many reasons why a carnivore diet would offer health benefits other than VA. Most people eating a carnivore diet are eating pork, eggs, and some even eat dairy. When I ate nothing but starch and muscle meat I had the worst detox symptoms but I also had the most relief of VA symptoms. When I tried to eat Garrets liberal diet I didn't see much of any improvement over time at all, I think it's way to generous with VA intake and I think a lot of his food recommendations are just wrong.

@salt  I agree with you that Dr Garret’s suggestions are too liberal.  Maybe for people who are not “that sick”, but I have a lot of damage to undo!  I am sticking to as close to zero A as possible.

I do wonder about the glucaric acid though. I’ve been incorporating half an apple (peeled) a day, in addition to meat, rice and beans. Grant mentioned that he ate applesauce occasionally (at least in the beginning of his diet).

I took apple cider vinegar for most days (not all) of my 2.5 months, and recently took a break from it for a few days.   ACV is like apple on steroids.  I think it has been helping me, but that sometimes I get too high in the amines that are mentioned in the vid.  I think my taste buds can be trusted to guide me on this-- when the pickle jar makes my mouth water.  For me, two tablespoons turned out to be too much after a while, so maybe I will go with one.  Plain in water it's just so harsh.  Vinegar/Juice/Water blend is nice with food.

I too am tightening up on carotenes in particular-- I want the yellow gone

I plan on testing out Calcium D glucarate at some point.  That would be the real test on whether this has any basis.
