Grain Carotenoids
Quote from joshz on December 19, 2019, 8:53 amAside from white rice and buckwheat, no other cooked grains are listed as approved on a well known doctor's VA Detox list. When I look up the carotenoid content of Oats and Brown Rice on WHFoods.com, the VA and carotenoid content is Zero. Likewise, Millet and Quinoa have extremely low carotenoid content which is even lower than black beans which is on the approved list. Does anyone know why this is? I will post links to the carotenoid and VA values of these foods below. I am specifically interested in incorporating Steel cut oats into my detox diet and perhaps brown rice occasionally.

I don't see why this is considering when I look up the carotenoid content of Oats and Brown Rice on WHFoods.com, the VA and carotenoid content is Zero. Likewise, Millet and Quinoa have extremely low carotenoid content which is even lower than black beans which is approved on his list. Does anyone have a logical explanation for this? Just depends on what site you use, but oatmeal does have VA per 100grams, as do all the other grains:
https://www.nutritionvalue.org/Cereals%2C_Dry%2C_Quick_Oats%2C_QUAKER_nutritional_value.html
Lutein + zeaxanthin 180.00 mcg I did not do well at the beginning keeping oatmeal as a staple. I am sure it would be fine in moderation after getting most VA out of your system.

Quote from joshz on December 19, 2019, 11:55 amOk that's good to know. Thanks for the clarification. I respect Dr. Smith a lot as he is clearly super wise and thorough so it was confusing with what I saw on WHFoods website. I am probably just going to remove all the grains out of the diet. I would keep white rice in if it agreed more, but it's pretty constipating and gluey so I don't see it being much help. Glad it helps some people though.
