Quote from grapes on August 6, 2019, 3:45 amAfter about a year on low A diet I took a test for serum A. In case it's relevant in the days prior to it I consumed a little soft alcohol (supposedly it mobilizes A from liver) .
The result is - 1,74 μmo/L , with the range being 1,55 to 3,30
Not sure what to take from it. It's rather positive cause I'm closer to the lower range. It means I guess that depletion takes quite a time, after a year I'm still in the range ! (or I was doing something wrong with my diet)

Quote from collden on August 6, 2019, 5:31 amThanks for the update. Serum levels of VA are usually kept pretty stable unless you have extremely high or extremely low body stores of VA, so for most people it doesn't provide much information about their status.
Whats your experience with the diet been other than that? Change in symptoms and overall health?

I see improvements in my symptoms : I no longer have recurrent stomach pains and acid reflux. Dry eyes are better, I had a small melbomian cyst which seems to have disappeared. Rosacea has improved too. Strangely sex drive seems to have lowered.

Quote from JMH on August 6, 2019, 8:17 am@grapes so promising your dry eyes are better! As you mentioned a meibomian cyst, do you know if your dry eye is due to meibomian gland dysfunction?
Also, do you know (or suspect) what caused your VA toxicity?

Yes I think dry eyes go together with meibomian glands dysfunction, at least for me. My symptoms were the "sand" in the eyes, burning tears and meibomian cysts forming from time to time. I still have sun sensitivity and sometimes burning tears.
As for my VA toxicity, 2 causes : diet, and most importantly, accutane, 5 months with 40-60 mg/daily. As a teen I ate a lot of sweet potatoes, eggs, carrots and bananas. Later after accutane I seeked to eat "healthier" so I ate some foods high in VA as cod liver, pâtés, green leafy's etc.

This is great news! Severe dry eye (mgd) is my issue. Thanks for posting.
Can I ask how long ago you took Accutane? I took it as well.
Also, how strict have you been on the diet?
Thank you!!

@michele, I took Accutane about 20 years ago.
I'd say my diet is at least 90% time - rice, beef, high quality bread, potatoes, cauliflower, garlic, onion. Occasional apples and bananas. For drinks coffee, ice tea, occasional wine and beer. I can slip off the diet on travel or social events, still avoiding high A foods.

Quote from grapes on August 18, 2019, 11:56 amI must note that the progress with the dry eyes is very fragile. For a few days I've been eating bread made with black olives, and I developed a very pronounced vascularization on an eye (which went away since) and had tears that burned horribly. Probably lutein is the bigger trigger for the eyes issues than other forms of A.

Quote from Jenny on August 18, 2019, 1:29 pmFunny you should say that @grapes about lutein as that’s what I’ve been thinking. When I developed acute VA toxicity symptoms I was supplementing retinol palmitate but also Macushield for eyes which contains lutein. Since going low A all my gritty & red eye symptoms have completely gone (thank goodness) apart from one occasion a while back & I realised I’d (unusually) eaten high lutein foods that day.

Quote from JMH on August 19, 2019, 8:11 am@grapes - thank you for the update!! There are a few of us trying this diet with severe dry eye from Accutane/Retin-A. Would you be willing to share details with us on your experience over the past year? I can provide my email address so we don’t flood Grant’s forum! 🙂
We would be very grateful for any encouragement and hope!!
