Hamster Experiment
Quote from William on February 9, 2023, 10:22 pmHello all,
I frequent Dr Smith's page but thought it would be prudent to post this here. If this is the wrong category I can repost it elsewhere.
I purchased a hamster a couple days ago to do the low A test like what Grant did.
Hamster experiement already has some very interesting results.
Her favorite food is hydrated rolled oats. Her stool pellets have doubled in size, yet dropped in quantity, are much softer and have a smell of bile. Seems like she's developed the sniffles too. All expected. She's still getting comfortable in the new environment and likely feeling under the weather atm, so only so much interaction can be done. I don't see any vomit so either she ate it back up (do hamsters do that?) or it's just the smell from her stool. She's not made a peep today, whereas yesterday and the day before she did. I fed her a small chunk of apple yesterday, and judging by how far cholestatic she appears to be, this might have triggered a diabetic reaction. Will refrain for a few days and see how it goes.
I attempted to feed her some beef, but she liked the oats better. She ran on her wheel for about 6 hours straight on her first night. I need to buy a silent wheel lol.
The gal at the store said these hamsters usually got really fat later in life and were prone to diabetes. Most of the foods have corn as the first or second ingredient. All I could think when I saw the labels of the food available for purchase was "no shit sherlock." Corn, carrots, fortification.

I would guess that the running on the wheel all night was because she was stressed. You can't read much into her health until the stress is in the rear view mirror.
