Increasing ALDH, other than alcohol. Also, has anyone gotten sick since starting?

Page 1 of 2Next

Just wondering where people are at with increasing their ALDH as Grant has mentioned in his last post. I know large amounts of alcohol stirs up my VA and causes an influx of post accutane symptoms, has anyone stuck to apple cider vinegar and seen results?

I also read that Sulforaphane can increase ALDH production

RESULTS:

In addition to SF, other electrophiles, including many Michael reaction acceptors, induce ALDH. Potencies of these agents as inducers parallel their activities in inducing NQO1, and are also dependent on Nrf2. In mice, in vivo, feeding of SF induced tissue ALDH and dramatically increased (doubled) the rate of elimination of acetaldehyde arising from the administration of ethanol.

On a side note, the other detox pathway Grant mentioned was through being sick Vit A would be naturally used to fight the infection or virus. I remember a few years ago when I was travelling in Thailand, I had a cold for around 2 weeks. I couldn't rest normally and prolonged it and if anything added to it with bad street food, resulting in food poisoning, and consuming a lot of alcohol. It being Thailand during June meant that I was sweating non stop. I remember after this though I felt my post-accutane symptoms being hugely improved, my mental clarity become much more noticeable and a few other symptoms abated.

Just wondering if anyone else has similar stories?

I no longer do the vinegar as a morning routine, but instead wait until the hankering for it comes along.  I can try to describe the hankering, but don't know if it's worth it?   Also, pickles are more important to me than ever--and I feel like they fill a niche in my eating scheme.

I've mentioned before, the only times in my life when my rosacea paled was during fever...

Hi Keero - ran across this awhile back - not sure if it's been posted yet - might be relevant for some

Retinoid receptors trigger neuritogenesis in retinal degenerations. PMID: 21940995

"Citral is a potent inhibitor of aldehyde dehydrogenases (ALDHs) responsible for the in vivo production of RA"

Mechanism of inhibition of aldehyde dehydrogenase by citral, a retinoid antagonist. Eur J Biochem. 1999 Jun; 262(3):704-12.[PubMed]

Citral is present in the oils of several plants, including lemon myrtle (90–98%), Litsea citrata (90%), Litsea cubeba (70–85%), lemongrass (65–85%), lemon tea-tree (70–80%), Ocimum gratissimum (66.5%), Lindera citriodora (about 65%), Calypranthes parriculata (about 62%), petitgrain (36%), lemon verbena (30–35%), lemon ironbark (26%), lemon balm (11%), lime (6–9%), lemon (2–5%), and orange.[2][3][4]

Molecular Biology of Pancreatic Ductal Adenocarcinoma Progression: Aberrant Activation of Developmental Pathways PMID: 21074729

Additional analysis showed that ALDH+ cells were enriched after exposure to chemotherapeutic agents and continued to exhibit tumorigenicity,199,200 thus prompting the authors to label these cells as candidate pancreatic cancer stem cells. While more work is needed to substantiate this claim, it is perplexing that the de novo expression of the machinery required for RA synthesis is associated with PDAC progression.

Interestingly, recent work from the Leach laboratory identified ALDH1 expression as a marker for centroacinar cells,60 a cell that has been theorized not only to be a putative stem cell within the pancreas, but also the cell of origin for PDAC.61

@hillcountry, so are you saying that lemon-flavored foods such as herbs or fruits may inhibit ALDH which in turn slows our detox?  (I LOVE your posts about studies you find, SO informative, but sometimes I long for your translation into good old-fashioned small words!  Please? I don't sprecken the lingo as Doctor Evil says...)

I grow and dry herbs, and do grow lemon balm and I don't remember which of my other herbs might have that lemon attribute.  Maybe my thyme plants that I got from Home Depot this year!   I got this from the google machine:

"Lemon flavored and scented herbs include lemon thyme, lemon basil, lemon mint, lemon verbena, lemon balm, lemongrass, and lemon bergamot. Lemony herbs can be grown in nearly every climate region except the very coldest."

As my tastes go, I love the scent of lemon or orange, although I do think there might be a limit to the amount of this flavor that I can do.   If faced with lemon cookies and plain, I will have one lemon cookie and 4 plain ones. 🙂   Even though I have tons of fresh lemon balm, I VERY RARELY make the tea.    However, walking through it is a joy, and lemon-scented soaps are nice.

It's interesting to note that lemon teas are used during bouts of colds and flu and laryngitis.  Is it because we WANT to keep VA working for us during illness?  Lemon balm is considered anti-viral.

Oh those darn plant poisons--always up to something!  🙂

Edited to add:  Although they will scarf down most kitchen scraps....Chickens will not eat citrus.

Did you end up throwing up? If you were eating low VA but were very va toxic at the time your body might have dumped a whole lot of va into the bile making you sick. I've had "food poisoning" three times this year. Every time it has started with cold symptoms tho... it then progesses into classic hypervitaminosis a symptoms: nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, fatigue, feeling toxic. I've just been through the latest round... it's no fun. I immediately started feeling better this week after I threw up a whole lot of bile while hunched over the bathtub at 3 in the morning... it then takes me a week or two to get back to eating normally.

Yes I'm sure I was sick quite a few times on that trip. Can say, speaking as an acute fix, that this trip provided the most progress to recovery more than all other things I can't think of. And that's been quite a lot now.

What are the chances @lil-chick@lilchick that you might consider growing brocolli sprouts as a side project?  They seem to work wonders in the autism community.

@kiero, That is an interesting thought!  Are people here doing sprouts?  Sprouts can be high in vitamin C, right?  Like the Vit C just comes out of no where?  And, if they are kept from the sunlight they aren't colored...

Sulphurophane mostly. The study I posted details how SP is able to induce ALDH. Growing yields higher bio available concentrations, more than what can be bought in supplement form, with the exception perhaps of a product available only in France.
