Increasing ALDH, other than alcohol. Also, has anyone gotten sick since starting?

Broccoli sprouts might be relatively high in A. Other sprouts, too. I have this theory that might be entirely wrong that A is involved when there are babies happening - baby plants, baby animals.... Eggs and milk, lots of colorful fruits/veggies containing seeds. I wonder if maybe it has to do with...well, I can't figure it out for plants. Maybe it's just a coincidence. But for animals, maybe it has to do with immunity somehow. Like, the ways that breastmilk is literally "training" a baby's immune system by utilizing a baby's naturally leaky gut - in an ideal scenario, the milk has just what baby's system needs to "learn" the lay of the land, in terms of what illnesses her/his mother is exposed to, etc.

Maybe in small doses, A is useful this way (and what was that study that showed the babies who had Vitamin A administered along with the Dtap vaccine were more likely to develop hearty antigens to the viruses...while at the same time being much more likely to die?!).

I have had three colds already since starting a Vitamin A detox on July 1st - and previously, I rarely got sick. It could be a coincidence, but I think not. I just can't figure out the details. 🙂

@sarabeth-matilsky remember tho that when we go low va we tend to experience greater levels of va toxicity which would indicate that va weakened your immunity. I think va may weaken us against viruses but may (just speculating) offer some protection from bacteria and parasites, life forms composed of cells that can be damaged by retinoic acid. It is present in plants as an anti oxidant, in leaves it protects chlorophyll from sunlight, we get to see the carotenoids in the autumn... There isnt actually that much va in milk or eggs, a calf does get a lot of va tho about 25000 iu per day if it is consuming 15 litres of milk, the problem for us is we concentrate the va by making cheese and butter, the amount in one egg is all that chick is ever exposed to until it hatches... The amount a calf gets does seem excessive, I can't imagine that is optimal however they will be completely adapted to that amount.

The modern chick will then receive a corn-feed which I'm sure is higher in beta carotenes than feeds prior to the corn revolution in agriculture.  And the feed will most probably be tainted with round up. (same with calf).

I have noticed something strange about switching my chickens to organic feed.  I've done it as part of this diet overhaul, and I've done it before.  It is about twice as expensive, so I'm often looking for a reason to stop.  And I did notice one!

Anywho... I'VE noticed that when chickens are on non-organic feed and suddenly switch to organic... I think their egg shells suffer.  It makes me wonder.  Is their body suddenly doing something different regarding minerals?  Is it rebuilding spongy bone, for instance?

Now, organic feed will have all the same stuff in it, except the roundup and other chems...

I am growing sometimes sprouts, broccoli too, if grown in the darkness, they do not contain much chlorophyll, they are white to yellow.

lc - seemingly endless debate at NOSB on synthetic methionine has been ongoing for years. Last I heard it is still not allowed in organic feed. Observed one of their meetings in San Antonio a few years ago and it sounded like a bunch of lawyers squabbling, misdirecting, obfuscating, and so on. The farmers up on the hotel’s surrounding balcony, overlooking the big table below, were fit to be tied. It’s all about the egg’s shell-strength, which suffers due to the difficulty of hens getting enough methionine, no matter the environment. One option is creating a real custom blend. Eric Sideman’s method is online. He chaired the NOSB livestock committee during the original debate. He adds organic whole wheat and whole oats, fish meal, alfalfa meal, sunflower meal and limestone, to a corn-soy meal organic base. The alternative for someone not selling organic eggs is to buy methionine in bulk and figure out how much to add to the organic feed ration. Your hens will love you!

There's a bottle of sodium butyrate around here somewhere. Might just give it a try to see what happens for a week or two; symptoms are pretty subdued of late. Might want to find a CYP stimulant to go along with it for a catabolic punch. But, then again, (coming to my senses), I'm wondering what it all looks like if I was really small and could stand inside an epithelial cell. Wonder what inhibiting HDAC has to do with the cell producing retinoic acid. Is it worth experimenting?

In the intestinal mucosa, retinoic acid (RA) is a critical signaling molecule. RA is derived from dietary vitamin A (retinol) through conversion by aldehyde dehydrogenases (aldh). Reduced levels of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) are associated with pathological microbial dysbiosis, inflammatory disease, and allergy. We hypothesized that SCFAs contribute to mucosal homeostasis by enhancing RA production in intestinal epithelia. With the use of human and mouse epithelial cell lines and primary enteroids, we studied the effect of SCFAs on the production of RA.

Functional RA conversion was analyzed by Adlefluor activity assays.

Butyrate (0-20 mM), in contrast to other SCFAs, dose dependently induced aldh1a1 or aldh1a3 transcript expression and increased RA conversion in human and mouse epithelial cells. Epithelial cell line data were replicated in intestinal organoids. In these organoids, butyrate (2-5 mM) upregulated aldh1a3 expression (36-fold over control), whereas aldh1a1 was not significantly affected.

Butyrate enhanced maturation markers (Mucin-2 and villin) but did not consistently affect stemness markers or other Wnt target genes (lgr5, olfm4, ascl2, cdkn1). In enteroids, the stimulation of RA production by SCFA was mimicked by inhibitors of histone deacetylase 3 (HDAC3) but not by HDAC1/2 inhibitors nor by agonists of butyrate receptors G-protein-coupled receptor (GPR)43 or GPR109A, indicating that butyrate stimulates RA production via HDAC3 inhibition. We conclude that the SCFA butyrate inhibits HDAC3 and thereby supports epithelial RA production.
