Is most of vitamin A removed through breath and urine, not bile?

Take a look at the following study: Vitamin A Metabolism and Requirements in the Human Studied with the Use of Labeled Retinol  https://annas-archive.org/scidb/10.1016/S0083-6729(08)60015-1

7 patients received radioactive retinyl acetate intravenously, 1 patient received it orally. Their breath, urine, and feces were monitored for 177 days afterwards. The radioactivity of the bodily fluids and excrements was measured to determine how fast the retinyl acetate was excreted and how.

Results: Most vit A was released via BREATH and URINE, only a minor part was released in bile.

Unfortunately, given that they received retinyl acetate (which is not present in food, as far as I understand) intravenously (except for one guy), it is not clear how applicable this is to real life retinol metabolism.

But IF it is, then this could potentially explain why high fiber low vit A dieters tend to have a harder time than low vit A zero fiber carnivores.

Why would carnivore help to process it better? You didn't explain that. Soluble fiber still cleans the bile better than no fiber. Even if vitamin A is processed by the kidneys and lungs. And carnivore would put more strain on the kidneys to process what the bile is not able to get rid of.

Carnivore diet improves kidney function. I have seen this on myself at least twice. Once the GFR jumped by 30 points when eating only meat, the second time by 20 points. There are several other such cases in the carnivore community.

The muscle meat carnivore diet seems to work better and faster with low vit A, as Grant himself observed, see his 10 year anniversary blog post and this forum where he mentioned this as well.

Why exactly that is, is not clear. It may be because of the kidney function improvement or because of the generally high copper content of high fiber foods.

My eGFR has always been very good on high carb. It was 94 right after starting the beef beans and rice. My husband's was 93 before starting carnivore after a few months it has dropped to 74, though that could be because he was dehydrated as it is tied to other numbers that can indicate dehydration. His BUN was high end of normal. His uric acid also jumped to 7.8. Creatine also went up to 1.25. He takes creatine and lifts heavy. All of these numbers indicate worsening kidney function but it would have to be a trend to know for sure. He also has low cholesterol but high normal trigs and low hdl. Will report again before he switches back to eating more carbs.

I think anyone trying out diets needs to be checking these numbers for trends. Both my husband and I have been tracking for a number of yrs so we can tell when things are shifting in the wrong direction.

It was before my time on here but Dino was big into breathing and felt pH was an important factor too. I'm not sure if he posted any studies supporting breathing specifically for Vitamin A.

Thank you @andrew-b for citing the thread on breathing. Some very important points there. I put a lot of thought on trying to convey my own experience but to no avail it seems. Obviously most people are not interested in getting better and prefer debating. Maybe they are not as sick as they pretend to be.

What exactly was he eating on the carnivore diet and did it include eggs, liver (and other organs), or dairy?

No eggs, never any liver, a little cheese in the beginning, but not now. He eats 85% ground beef, ribeye steak, chicken breast and pork roast and bacon occasionally.

@jessica2

So you believe the reason Grant was healed is that he eliminated milk and wheat and that healed his kidneys? That seems pretty miraculous considering the doctors basically gave him a death sentence.

My mother was born with an under-developed kidney.   This might explain why she got lupus and her 3 kids seemed prone to auto-immune issues.   And why the 3 kids got crooked teeth.   Perhaps we all started life behind in B-vitamins and overloaded in A.
