It's the Microbiome Stupid

PreviousPage 16 of 16

Maybe going super low with Vitamin A could negatively affect dysbiosis prone individuals.

According to AI Google,

The gut microbiome metabolizes dietary vitamin A (retinol) into active retinoids like retinoic acid, which are critical for immune regulation, gut barrier integrity, and combating infections. Commensal bacteria, particularly in the intestine, expand this metabolic capacity, with specific strains regulating retinoic acid levels to balance immunity and prevent pathogen infection.

Key Connections Between Retinol and the Gut Microbiome
  • Bacterial Metabolism of Retinoids: Gut commensals, such as those within the class Clostridia, produce retinoic acid (RA) from retinol. This process is crucial for priming the immune system to combat gut infections, such as Salmonella.
  • Immune System Modulation: Retinoic acid, produced in part through bacterial interaction, regulates gut-homing T cells and maintains immune homeostasis.
  • Retinol Transport Regulation: The microbiota induces the expression of retinol-binding proteins (e.g., serum amyloid A) in the intestinal epithelium. These proteins facilitate the transfer of retinol from gut cells to immune cells (myeloid cells).
  • Microbial Diversity and Vitamin A: Diets rich in vitamin A/carotenoids contribute to increased gut microbiome diversity, which in turn influences the efficiency of vitamin A metabolism.
  • Effects of Deficiency: Acute deficiency in vitamin A alters the composition of the gut microbiota in mice, indicating a two-way interaction where the host’s nutrient status affects the microbial community.

Mechanism of Action
Gut bacteria communicate with intestinal epithelial cells (IECs) to modulate the conversion of vitamin A. While some bacteria enhance this process, others (like some Clostridia strains) can suppress the expression of retinol dehydrogenase 7 (Rdh7), an enzyme in the intestinal cells that converts vitamin A to its active form, suggesting a finely tuned regulation of retinoid levels to avoid excessive immune activity.

Recent studies even suggest the potential for "probiotic-based retinoid therapy," leveraging specific microbes to improve gut health and strengthen the intestinal barrier,

Armin, have you continued to see more improvements? I'm 4-6 weeks into this and havent noticed much of anything. Maybe its time to mix in the subtillis and see what happens. I like the fact that the yogurt gives me both a good dose of calcium and protein and it gives me something to mix the collagen powder into so I dont want to ditch it, but I'm not seeing a lot of benefit so far.

Not to suggest you will have amazing results only if you stay on it for half a decade but 4-6 weeks is a relatively short period of time to overhaul things. I and many others have given the vitamin A elimination diet 5 years, yielded pitiful results, and still ask for more time.

I'm super glad that Armin found this for himself, and others might find it helps them too, but not everyone is going to find that flora/yogurt is their magical cure.

We've all got this "health onion" and we are peeling down through the layers...

I agree. I can't promise amazing results but neither can any diet/theory/program. How many people here and elsewhere have actually had long term success stories? I would wager almost zero. But having a strong gut foundation will never be a bad thing. Extreme elimination diets can definitely mess ones up and I believe they have, especially due to a certain doctor who, in my opinion, will never pivot into the right direction until everyone leaves as he has pompously pontificated his idea as his divine mission in life.

I'm only about 18 months into low vitamin A. I started on calcium as well about the time all the drama unfolded on LYL. Most of my health has improved but I'm still exhausted and still stuck with the diabetes. As mentioned before, the yogurt is a good delivery mechanism for calcium and protein and I can easily mix the collagen powder into it so I dont mind continuing another few months even if it isnt a magic cure all.
