Ka-BOOM: sudden overload from restaurant food.
Quote from Larry on July 8, 2025, 6:25 amQuote from Tanveen on July 7, 2025, 5:01 amPlease be careful: beef fat contains a precursor to vitamin A.
Please verify source data about that.
Nutritional web site states clearly that beef fat (tallow) has none.
Wondering now which is correct.

Thanks for this post. A few other people have reported similar experiences. I'm speculating that with the reduced vA intake over a few years the body reduces its defensive readiness and therefore becomes most susceptible to even moderate acute doses.

Quote from lil chick on July 8, 2025, 8:34 amThere are lots of suspects when it comes to restaurant food. Recently a new one came up on my radar. A video about how ice in restaurants isn't always stored in such a cleanly fashion and etc. I had a friend once who did not trust restaurant ice. Of course, travelers also tell you not to drink the water. When I go to the nearby town all restaurant water tastes like chlorine to me.
Of course, I suppose that ice is just a subset of the problems with restaurant and bar cleanliness. My husband, who grew up in a bar, tells about how gross beer lines (out of the keg) are and will comment when he tastes that problem ruining a good beer.
I long ago had to give up on anything deep fried from restaurants. Did you know they don't really throw away the grease (or very rarely). They just keep adding more every day.
Long cooked meats, such as BBQ, is also a problem for me. All I can think of is that the food actually starts to break down in such a way that it ends up on the detox pathways. Amines I guess. MSG is an amine.
And how long in advance are the foods made? Amines will also build up in foods that have just been stored in the fridge a long time. At home, I don't keep things longer than a 3 days.
Tomatoe paste is in so many things and has so many different problems including VA and amines and other tomato toxins... but boiled down into a concentrate!
And of course if you don't eat dairy that may be in many things as well, including sauces, breads, desserts...
Even some asian food has dairy and tomatoes.

Quote from Jiří on July 8, 2025, 10:39 am@lil-chick by far the worst are fried foods. Refined vegetable oil is bad even if it's fresh from the bottle. Now imagine oil that is in that fryer whole week. Oxidized like 100 times before gets changed. It is crazy toxic stuff.. Everything else in comparison with it like some MSG is a joke..

Quote from lil chick on July 8, 2025, 10:49 amYes, Jiri, I've been off of fried food for probably 25 years now. And I bet it has helped me in other ways besides avoiding Ka-boom.
I can eat out once a day on vacation (max) if I try to find simple things on the menu. Baked fish or seafood, a hamburger, a steak, baked potato. Strangely enough I can sometimes do curry with rice and shrimp. Pizza without sauce, pepperoni or other aged meats. However, I can do mushrooms, pineapple, and ham on pizza. It ticks me off that no one peels cucumbers anymore, and I will sit there and cut off the peel of any cucumbers that arrive. I will usually be OK with coleslaw, and I like the occasional Caesar salad even though it is probably a pretty heavy carotene cheat. I get an urge for lettuce now and then. Don't forget to ask for a pickle if it makes sense with your dish.
I once got food poisoning from undercooked restaurant chicken and 40 years later I almost never order chicken LOL.
On the topic of alcohol, I think it will add to your chances of Ka-boom. Bubbles (effervescence) can also be problematic. I've come to the realization (and I think Ourania maybe has too?) that distilled alcohol might be somewhat less troublesome than beer and wine? However, now and then I do get the urge for a medicinal amount of red wine and I think it may have some magical qualities (like against germs?). But for me this medicinal level is just a tiny amount, not a whole glass.
Our son used to go to college near a curry shop and I was always intrigued and wondered why it didn't give me a stomach ache. Perhaps some sort of herbal wisdom in there. Also, in any sort of Asian restaurant the PLAIN rice is something that will fill your empty stomach without Ka-booming. I once was in a tough spot and only ate the white rice at a food court in a mall, and it gave me steady energy to get through a tough day. (I remember thinking I'd have a blood sugar drop, but it didn't happen).
Another smart thing to remember, to have a good night, is no caffeine after morning.
