Magnesium and angina

About 25 years ago during my aerobic class I became aware of a chest pain. Over the years the pain increased and was diagnosed as angina on exertion (probably) due to the stiffness of the anterior septum. The diagnosing doctor wasn’t totally sure.

I noticed that my thyroid meds when dosed excessively will increase the pain and that regular intake of magnesium diminishes the pain, sometimes to nearly 0.

I would wish not to take any supplements and get my nutrients from food but have not been successful to do so. 2 days without magnesium and the pain on exertion is back.

Does anyone have any idea why I have this constant need from magnesium?  (regardless of a diet which has always been considered nutrients dense). I will be grateful for your opinions. 🌹

You know the whole topic of magnesium is kind of mysterious to me, and back before when I've tried taking it I've had very bizarre reactions.  I probably need it, LOL.

On another list, many people were liking transdermal magnesium.  I've never tried it (besides the occasional epsom salt bath).

@lil-chick, yes the mystery magnesium! I have the transdermal (MgCl) which I used to apply on it’s own  and with DMSO for better absorption. I have taken many forms of it over they years. Sometimes I dread to think what would happen if I had no access to any.

This is what I have been using for magnesium, @lil-chick:

I bought a large jar of magnesium chloride flakes from Now, and a glass spray bottle. Since you don’t need much magnesium salt to make the “oil,” it’s going to last a long while!  😁

@beata-2 How amazing that magnesium works so brilliantly for your chest pain! 😊

I was supplement-free for several years, but ended up deciding I wanted to try whatever might help make this detox process easier, so I take 2 amino acids, 3 vitamins, and 5 minerals at this point, along with a few other miscellaneous things.  😆 Hopefully I will be able to stop them as the detox progresses, but right now I am grateful I notice a difference from taking them.

Dr. Garret Smith has a video as well as an article on his research forum about his hypothesis regarding magnesium depletion as directly caused by vitamin A. Unfortunately, the main link with most of his research on this subject appears to be broken.

I can guess 3 options why this is happening. Just based on what I've heard.

1) Here asked not to refer to RP, but he said that the retention of minerals by cells depends on the level of progesterone (and the production of progesterone depends on the thyroid hormone and judging by what they write on the forums, you need to have enough B1 for this)

2) I understand that you still adhere to a diet of beans. They can contain a lot of oxalates, and oxalates deplete magnesium and calcium.

3) one user on this forum had an idea (I don't remember the nickname, it was discussed somewhere) that candida secretes alkali and this causes the body to lose magnesium in order to balance the pH of the blood.

I don't know what is true in your case. Perhaps this information will help you.

@puddleduck, my history of taking supplements is long and convoluted! From bagfuls of really expensive ones to none to now some.
I eat high quality foods and would hope eventually to be able not to take any supplements.  The hypothesis that vit. A stands behind Mg deficiency  is interesting and I am looking forward to prove it right.

@daniil, I will approach your suggestions from the last point.
1. I definitely do not suffer from candida. So this could not be it.

2. Oxalates. Yes, I eat 1/2 cup of beans trice per day. The FB oxalate group would probably asses this as oxalate poisoning.
I also drink copious amounts of water hoping for any oxalates to be urinated out. On this one, I am not sure as oxalates are thickly surrounded by theories.

3. I briefly followed Ray but very quickly understood that it was not for me. I am allergic to milk, eating liver at that time was giving me headaches from hell, orange  juice was never my thing…

But I am a medicated hypothyroid (with optimal T3) and  my hormones most probably have suffered over the years when I was struggling to adjust my thyroid meds. So there might be something here. Vitamin B1 made me feel unwell and off and I stopped taking it. My HMA  shows low magnesium and lowish calcium.
