MCAS and Histamine Intolerance theory
Quote from Megan on December 30, 2019, 2:17 pmHi Ya'all, this is my first post here. I'm an introvert, so while I can write for my blog, it's hard for me to speak up in more casual settings. I definitely enjoy reading the discussions here regularly. I've been busy producing a cookbook (that includes vitamin A detox recipes!) so haven't made the time until today. But I do want to share with anyone who reads here that I overcame endometriosis and MCAS/histamine intolerance through a very low vitamin A diet. I'm linking to my article for anyone who wants to read the full account, but the gist of it is this, from the article:
"In contrast to common allergies, Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS) assumes an individual has malfunctioning mast cells, a full-blown immune disorder resulting in over-responsive mast cells ... I would like to propose an alternative theory regarding MCAS, based on the diet that helped me to improve. Perhaps mast cells are not over-reacting. Perhaps mast cells in those who struggle with histamine issues are actually reacting to a toxin in the body that hasn’t yet been recognized. My current diet supports the theory that this hidden toxin is excess vitamin A." You can read the full theory here: https://eatbeautiful.net/2019/09/15/mcas-histamine-lectin-intolerance-tips/
Thanks, and I welcome your comments!

Quote from Jenny on December 30, 2019, 2:47 pmExcellent blog Megan. I’m so pleased to hear of your successes. My sister has had problems with histamine & I’m now convinced (for many reasons) that her route problem is vitamin A toxicity so I’m very interested in your theory.

Quote from Megan on December 30, 2019, 2:57 pmThank you, JAJ! I appreciate it! I believe there are other contributing factors, like my use of internal tea tree oil, which helped a potential bacterial imbalance. I hope others (like your sister) with this condition will try out the theory as well. I'm now a big fan of using nano-particle colloidal silver, in place of tea tree (as tea tree does contain vitamin A precursors and produced some eczema on my fingers), alongside the very low vitamin A diet. Cheers. 🙂

Quote from lil chick on December 31, 2019, 8:02 amHello Megan,
I also found that I had a low tolerance to histamines, and so I can't help but agree with your premise! I haven't had a migraine since starting (7+ months). Other problems are more sticky.
Of course time will tell and the proof will be in the pudding. (in all of our cases!)
Looking forward to your continued participation, and hope you will hang out and share your opinions and knowledge
It's a nice group, at least when we aren't cranky, but who can blame us? 🙂

Quote from Megan on December 31, 2019, 4:11 pmSuper cute, Lil Chick, thank you! Yes, interesting how many of us have had histamine issues resolve from the diet. It's a common theme. 🙂 Thanks for your warm welcome. I'm sure everyone is as wonderful as is possible! I'm happy for you that your migraines have resolved!!

Quote from Tanveen on July 2, 2025, 1:31 pmHello Megan - I have been diagnosed with MCAS and pots after the Covid vaccine - I tried sodium cromoglicate which helped for a short time but then I became sensitive to it. Dao enzyme and antihistamines didn’t work, nor did ketotifen or beta blockers - any additional medicine made me sicker and had bad side effects. Many alternative practitioners refer to diet changes (eg freezing meat, not eating processed meat etc) but do not refer to the cause. I just wondered how long it took you on the low vitamin a diet to heal your body so you could eat more foods again? I had had issues eating soya before and I think it was related to the thyroid. Thank you
