My eyes have been feeling dry and vision is blurry - VA deficiency?

Page 1 of 2Next

I also feel dehydrated though I make sure to drink enough water.

Im sensitive to light, bright lights stay in my vision after.  I could focus and lost some vision to a lightning bolt like shape in my eye.

my peripheral vision seems to be effeceted, center seems ok.  I know dryness have causes my vision to be blurry.

I've been on a No A diet for almost 6 months.   I looked up the symptoms and one said vitamin A deficiency.   I don't know what to do cause I don't know what is really causing this.

I have been eating different foods.  I started apple cider vinegar(ACV) every morning for about two weeks now, so I'm thinking thats the big change.  Dry eyes started during ACV.  Ive stopped for a few days now.   I also had vietnamese pho, chik fila and their fires, and also casin os black pepper steak with their sauce which probably has soy sauce and other things in it.  started walnuts and almonds organic from costco.

Been eating 1/4 teaspoon of Mortons iodine salt everyday, a small little pack for lunch and dinner.

Been doing glutamine and glycine powder as well. Just throwing things out there in case someone knows anything.

I havent had a bowel movement in since the 21st, so this morning is the 24th and should be going.

what should I do.    I did stop my probiotics and b3 and other vitamins regimen for when I was improving the last 6 months...  Im afraid to eat anything now.

Dry eyes, nose, ears, lips, mouth, gums, skin is some of what I'm here for.    Yes, my eyes are sensitive to light too.  Ears are sensitive to sound, gums are sensitive to spice, nose is sensitive to pollen, balance is sensitive to motion, skin is sensitive to sun (ugh!).  Like being an open wound or an alien in the environment.

I do think drinking enough water AND getting lots of fats helps.  I also think that closing your eyes and rolling them around in there is helpful and should be done as much as possible.  Booze dries me out further.  Dark glasses are necessary to have around especially during travel.

I'm also TRYING to see if short exposures to the sun is beneficial.  ie, maybe the reason we are so sun sensitive is because the sun kills the A?  I go out once a day in the bright sun at noon in a swim suit, lay down and turn like meat on a stick, do a bit of weeding so my eyes get a bit of light in them, sit there and look around.

Then I go back to my hovel and my dark glasses.  🙂

I looked back at photographs and I can see this all started for me about 15 years ago.  I can't expect that it's going to clear up over night.  I'm trying very hard not to get frustrated or obsessed and just be patient.  My naturopath used to say we are new every 7 years...

Edited to add:  I'm also experimenting with listening very carefully to what my body WANTS, tastes and mouth feels and macro nutrients etc.

Hi lil chick,

I don't think Im sensitive to the sun like yourself.  Being in the sun always makes me feel better but for the past 9 months I haven't gottem much sun  and I'm in SoCal!   The weather has been strange.   Im heading to Hawaii tomorrow for a week so hopefully I can escape the EMF's here and get lots of sun.

I am allergic to alcohol. I get hot and blisters and just feel like crap overall.   I heard people who drink alcohol alot have very little VA in their liver.  Like maybe it pushes all the excess VA out and causes problems for us.

My dry eyes have happened many times in my life but usually for a day or so not like almost two weeks like this.  So I'm thinking it's something I did recently unless its an accumulation of something Ive been doing.

I'm so confused now.

Could the body be shuffling things around?  I def have some new symptoms too.  I'm not going to worry too much I don't think.

My lunch was just 2 strips of bacon and then organic bread dipped in bacon grease and home-made grape jelly with organic coffee and skim raw milk.

My bowels have been moving a lot.  Either the same as before (daily) or MORE often.  I've been thinking of ways to detox and BMs are certainly part of the scenario.  I think I may try washing my hair daily, swiping out my ears daily, picking my nose more often haha ... Oil pulling for the mouth...

We have so much pollen right now and it's rough on the dry eyes.  I dip q-tips in distilled water and sweeep gently across my eyes and sometimes there is stuff there that isn't getting cleaned away.  (shakes head)

Who knew cleanliness was in my future.

Just for your sanity, I was eating SO MUCH vitamin A (before Grant's theory came my way) and had the dryest eyes in the world...

How much Vitamin A were you getting prior to starting this diet?

Are you getting any Vitamin C?

Why are you doing apple cider vinegar?

No bowel movement in 3 days suggest you are severely under-eating, not getting enough protein and calories can cause many issues regardless of your diet.

Lil chick,

i wish I could go daily. I think I do have leaky gut issues. The past few months I was doing well  with my diet that I was going almost every day. I may have to go back to what I was doing to see if that that helps.

Collden

i had been eating a lot of eggs almost everyday for breakfast for 7 years and last year added a lot of sweet potatoes on advice from my mold illness doctor, who I now think deliberately tried to get me sick. He’s a Dr Shoemaker certified dr and The Shoemaker protocol calls for a low amilose diet which means no potatoes of any kind.

I also took 5000ius of vitamin D for 3 months with all of that because my MD said I was “low”.  That’s when things really started to get bad...

i was taking apple cider vinegar because I read it was good for clearing up my lymph nodes. I have two under my jaw joint that we’re as swollen as a marble.  Massaging them reduces its my as much to he size of a pea.  But it fluctuates back and forth in size.  But no where near the size of the marbles since I’ve been actively massaging my neck.

But I have a feeling it’s the ACV that’s causing me the dry eyes and vision issues. Maybe my diet as well. Can’t rule anything out really.

Well if you're not getting any Vitamin C I'd supplement at least 500mg/day. I think doing VA depletion can increase need for Vitamin C and a typical low VA diet is also quite low in Vitamin C. A deficiency of Vitamin C can cause the eye symptoms you are describing

I'm glad you are posting here, I've been enjoying reading your lucid posts on the Ray Peat forum.

Do you supplement with this much C? I'm kind of on the fence about it as my gut is quite sensitive to it and anything over 100mg is quite an unnatural amount in the diet yet I'm aware that in situations like VA detox it probably is beneficial. I'm thinking once someone is no longer dumping VA in large amounts and they stay on a low VA diet that their C needs will likely be reduced somewhat?

Yeah I take 500mg/day in the morning, not that difficult to get this amount through diet if you eat a lot of fruits or veggies, and I haven't seen any source saying this amount could be problematic as its well below the upper tolerable limit of 2000mg/day. Maybe experiment with different excipients or taking it with/without meals if you have stomach problems?

500mg might be overkill but if you're not eating a lot of cauliflower every day and experiencing heavy VA detox symptoms I think it makes sense to supplement at least a few hundred mg, as there is a big overlap between the symptoms of VA toxicity and Vit C deficiency.
