I used to have extremely oily skin two years ago and, of course, I had acnes due to it. I was thinking that my life was a real nightmare with them ( that was the main mistake of my life). And I tried to find a solution as faster as possible. I watched a lot of videos on YouTube where people with clear faces were praising such drug as Accutane. I thought that was the key to change my life in a better way and decided to take it. In overall,my dosage was 6000mg for 10 months. Did it clear my face? Yes. Was I happy with that? No. My life changed but in a worst way. I became a depressed, always tired person. Of course,I tried not to pay attention to it at first, like nothing was happening and everything's okay. But alopecia knocked me down mostly and then I searched lots of articles in the Internet to understand what the heck was happening with me. That's the reason why I'm here.
My side effects that I was experiencing after accutane:
- alopecia ( lost about 50% hair on my head)
- dry skin, lips, nose and eyes
- bloating
- headaches
- fatigue (always yawning; the bed became my best friend)
- long recovery after training ( it could last for a week)
- became unsociable (indifferent almost to everything)
- frequent urination
-big appetite ( I had never eaten too much in my life, sometimes I could have eaten only once in a day and that was okay)
- joints crunch
- terrible memory
- brain fog
- anxiety (scared of every rustle)
And many-many other problems that I may have experienced but didn't pay attention to them
Now I'm sticking to a low vitamin A diet for 3 months. I'm still experiencing those side effects but at least I see the changes like:
- the skin is getting oily little by little. Eyes almost don't bother me. Lips are still dry but much less.
- my hair is getting thicker. I always see how do they change, it usually depends on experiencing I am detox or not
-better sleep
- less anxiety
- less urination
- sometimes better mood
- bloating has recently become less but now I have little pain in my stomach that was never before. I've seen several people who had some gut problems after a diet (like IBS and colitis). I don't know what I can do with it.I should also mention my detox symptoms. When I only started this diet I had worsening symptoms . There were joint pain, depression, extreme fatigue ( even more than I used to have) etc. I guess that was my first detox symptoms and they were the worst. After them I experienced the first improvements and it took for about 10 days. And then detox again... I still experiencing such flared up symptoms but they are less severe than the first ones. It usually happens in waves. I guess that's normal. I think the body is releasing more vitaminA/retinoic acid in a such way.
I don't know how long will it be for me. Some people still struggle even If they're on the diet more than 6-12 months, others recover faster. I guess it depends how many vit A in your liver. Everyone has different amounts. At least, we all know what the reason of our problems is. If we didn't know that, we'd never recover. Hope one day the medicine will be able to diagnose such problems and people won't get ill. I guess it also depends on us, because only we know how dangerous it could be. But what about others? There are lots of people who also have eczema, fatigue etc. and they don't even understand why it is happening with them. That's horrible. This thought always worries me.About my diet. I'm not sticking only to rice and beef, it's impossible to be so strict for me. My usual food list: different types of meat, apple and grapes juice, potato, onion, buckwheat, bread, sunflower seeds, black chocolate, ham, coffee, tea, lemon, bananas, pears. And I don't take any supplements.
So, I hope my story would be helpful for someone. I'll try to keep you updated.

Quote from Nail on November 17, 2019, 12:39 pmMonth 4 update.
Everything's improving by little steps. I still have detox symptoms. Nevertheless, I should mention that they are less severe. For instance, I don't have strong headaches and vertigo anymore. Before such things could last for weeks but now it usually last only for hours or a day and then I feel better. In overall, I see the progress.
One of the important things I want to mention is that my detox symptoms usually appear after a meal, especially a high protein meal. If I eat chicken, beef or other high-protein sources, I notice how my pulse is rises and my symptoms are getting worse a little. I suppose protein binds vit A from the liver and then removes it from the body. So, I'm not afraid of those bad symptoms, just because I know that I'll feel better soon.

Quote from Neilky on November 18, 2019, 2:32 amInteresting theory on the protein intake. I think I may also be affected by this, but it's hard to tell.
Isn't RBP supposed to be protectionary though?

Quote from Nail on November 19, 2019, 1:44 pmI don't know how it works for 100%. I guess, nobody knows.
But I've seen a study where a high protein intake greatly helped to remove vitA from the body. As for me, this theory works and I really see improvements after a detoxification flared up by protein.
Nevertheless, It doesn't mean that people should consume protein as much as possible. Your kidneys won't stand it. Everything should be done rationally.

Quote from Nail on January 4, 2020, 3:46 amHey, here's a 5.5 month point.
I would say that it's really working. Now I could sleep more than 6-7 hours without waking up, I don't have extremely dry skin which disturbed me even in summer time, my memory is much better, hair looks healthier and so on. Of course, it's not perfect, but it's a good sign to continue the diet.
I hope my results would be important for those who took accutane. Lots of them, who suffer from its side effects, don't even want to believe that it's something related to Vitamin A and its toxicity. Maybe one day they'll realize it.
Detox symptoms are still with me but they are less severe. I still experience them more after a high protein meal.
Also I've noticed recently that I really don't want to eat high vitA food. I couldn't imagine me eating carrot, for example. And sometimes I crave for meat or any other source of protein(especially bread). If I don't consume it enough, I feel dissatisfied. I've never eaten meat so much in my life before. I suppose that protein is essential in eliminating VitA.
Hope everyone feels better, too)) If you don't write about your story and why you are here, please, start doing it. It could be really important for everyone, we should share our experience.

It's good to hear that you're seeing improvements! 😀 Thanks for sharing your story.
Haha, I have no interest in carrots (or sweet potatoes for that matter) at this point, either. The thought turns my stomach a bit, actually.
I think you're right about the importance of protein. If I don't get enough of it, symptoms return. You may have seen this already, but I remember a thread a while back where several members reported that they had a strong craving and need to consume a lot of meat as well (especially at first).
I hope things keep getting better for you.
Best wishes as you continue, Nail!

I guess my health is getting better but these changes aren't as noticable as it was in the previous posts. I would say that I'm good. I'm getting used to my health conditions.
Just remember that little by little everything's improving.
I want to point out other things that I've noticed recently.
1. As I wrote, I always have worsening symptoms after a high protein meal. Now it's not so noticable though. And when I experience these symptoms, my body temperature is also rises. At these moments it's much easier to get a flue. It's like my body doesn't keep warm properly and my immunity is terrible.
I would recommend you to monitor your temperature also. I guess it could happen with the others.
2. Due to these immune changes I caught a flue some time ago. I was in a really terrible condition that time. Any medicals almost didn't help. Always fatigue, drowsiness and so on. It took for a week to start feeling better a little. It's a weird thing. I also had some gut problems due to it. It felt like I was experiencing a deep detox circle.
I've read that some people had experienced the same. I suppose it's not a usual flue, something related to vitamin A detoxification maybe.
Anyway, I had several so called "flue symptoms " right from the beginning of the diet. This one was the toughest and I decided to point it out.
Also I simplified my diet. Now I could afford myself food with eggs in the composition. "Oreo" cookies and drinks based on skimmed milk. Now I'm not so sensitive to it. Skimmed milk is a good thing I would say. I've tried some skim curd and it's a good source of protein.

I would love to know how you are doing now ? I am an accutane survivor too and I am very interested by low vitamin A diet.
