I don't know how you guys, but I had a lot of "cringe" moments listening this..

The only part of this interview that I liked and agreed with was the discussion about Hypervitaminosis A being an epidemic.

I found many problems with the rest of what he said.

He's so confused about dehydrogenase enzymes and vA. Firstly retinol has its own set of enzymes, alcohol dehydrogenases are not needed for retinol metabolism. Because of this misunderstanding he claims Asians have trouble metabolizing vA because of alcohol dehydrogenase deficiencies. He thinks alcohol dehydrogenases are important to detox and then goes on to discuss that it is these enzymes that create retinoic acid (excess retinoic acid being the main cause of toxicity in Hypervitaminosis A)...

Anything that up-regulates alcohol and retinol dehydrogenase will lead to even more retinoic acid and more toxicity. The key to vA detox is time and also increasing the excretion of retinoic acid, not the creation of it...

An example of an enzyme that is involved in retinoid excretion is UDP-glucuronyltransferase/UDP-glucuronosyltransferase that metabolizes retinoic acid into retinyl beta-glucuronide.

I follow Dr Smith’s work & you are wrong in thinking he doesn’t understand this. However, I agree with you on the Asian flush gene - SNPs are quite specific & ALDH2 does not have high affinity for retinaldehyde from my understanding. There are a several ALDH enzymes with various substrate preferences but with some non-specificity.

If you followed his work closely you would agree with him on the vast majority of topics. I follow both your opinions so I know this!! On these podcasts you just get little snippets. We are all in this together. We all want to understand more about vA toxicity & what to do about it so I can’t really understand the negative attitude as it’s not the way I roll. I do sometimes wonder if it’s a male thing (not that I mean to be sexist) just an observation. I’m female & middle-aged so I have a different perspective on these things I guess.

@jaj What I don't like the most listening him is that he "keeps his secrets" talks . So people hopefully will hire him... To me it's a sign that he is not doing well clients and is maybe little bit desperate..

I don’t think so Jiri. He’s a family man with two young kids so he needs to make a living & vA toxicity is a bit leftfield for most people I think. I’m just glad he’s doing what he’s doing as I’ve learnt a lot from him. I found Grant’s work through him so I’m very grateful or I’d still be on that negative downward health spiral not knowing what I was doing wrong as I was ‘doing all the right things’ but getting fatter & sicker.

Smith didn't say something reasonable like Hypervitaminosis A can make one more susceptible to scurvy, he said that vA causes scurvy! Outrageous.

And yeah he is confused about alcohol dehydrogenases, I've explained why above.

He's a health practitioner and he is talking about vA as a non nutritive toxin... madness.

I take issue with the way he attacked Masterjohn. Masterjohn is a decent scientist, he is misled about vA but the decent approach is to criticize his ideas about vA not publicly discuss his personal health issues like Smith has.

In the interview he claims that white rice and gelatin cause disease and it's because they are refined, who believes these outdated and cliched naturopathic ideas anymore? Yet he was recently giving his patients high dose synthetic retinol! Even hardcore WAPFers know not to take it, it's a terrible idea even if one is a health practitioner without a full appreciation of the issues with vA.

I think it's the opposite. He is giving away his best stuff for free. And puts no effort into his paid content. I bought some of his info back in the day. All I got was a poorly made word document.

It's very common thing on paid content these days. Been tricked by that many times.

@tim-2 exactly. "white rice will give you beri beri". Yeah millions and millions and millions of people in asia are basically walking beri beri hehe.. They eat like 500g of white rice a day as a main source of calories.. Also refined gelatin is unhealthy because it is refined. Like why or how. If I add dissolved gelatin into my meal. The body has no idea if those amino acids come from "refined powder" or piece of animal skin for example.. He should say that gelatin or hydrolyzed collagen can be contaminated with some heavy metals like lead. That would be valid concern and that's why I just make home made gelatin. So I know exactly what is in it..

@diogenes I am talking about his interview where for example instead of telling us what type of fibers we should eat. He is saying all the time "specific types of fibers" etc.. Also is talking all the time how "he developed the approach" so you will detox not to fast, not to slow etc.. Simply when you listening that interview it screams "give me money and I will help you with my secrets".. There are no secrets. Some more specific or drastic approach can do more harm than good... If you think you have issues with vit A toxicity, just don't eat any foods high in vit A. That's it..

@jiri

Yeah exactly billions live long healthy lives eating white rice every day of their lives. I'm not committed enough to cook up pig feet but it sounds ok, if I could buy some head cheese/brawn I would, have you had that? It is full of gelatin. I eat some of the cartilage when I eat roast chicken and once in a while I make some jelly.

It's because there are only two main types of soluble fibre LOL, pectin and beta-glucan. He tells people to consume the type that converts into methanol and formaldehyde...

@tim-2  Yes head cheese is made here mostly from pig feet. Sometimes knee. People eat it with vinegar, onions, mustard, bread and for the drink bear of course.. People in CZ are beer people. I don't drink at all. So I am outcast.. 🙂 Pig feet are nothing but bones and connective tissues. After cooking I pour the liquids through sifter into a big bowl from the pressure cooker (with bones there is left a lot of undissolved connective tissues that is added to the liquid if you make head cheese, but I don't eat it, because there is a lot of fat in it..) I let it cool down and put it in the fridge. The next day it is all solid and the gelatin is solid like rubber. Basically all fat is on top like some "cover" which I also don't eat and just put like 1 tbsp to my every meat meal. So I have balance of amino acids from connective tissue and muscle meat.. High methionine and low glycine intake is really bad. That's what I was doing for 10 years when I was bodybuild..
