Newbie to this site: oxalates, lectins, Vit A, (accutane), histamine intolerance

Q:  I came here for oxalates, but now I'm very curious on the "Low A Diet".  Does this mean only beta carotenes?  Or does it mean fully formed, bio-available Vitamin A, such as you would find in animal -derived foods?   Possible side note:  I know that I have a lot of British genes and my haplogroup is from the general "Norwegian" area.  I heard many years ago from the Weston A Price Foundation that people whose ancestors ate a lot of fish were obtaining a lot of Vitamin A that way and so their descendants may have a genetic change that reduces our abilities to make Vitamin A from beta carotenes.  So, Now I am wondering... does this Low A Diet point to arguments that if we eat too many beta carotenes that we can become toxic?  I need a primer!  Please help me get up to speed on this!

2.  My husband took two courses of Accutane:  one in his teens and one about age 24.  He now has "benign fatty cysts" all over his body in soft tissue.  I have long wondered if this was from the Accutane. I'd like to read more on this, but if someone wants to comment and also give me a primer here (links, documents, etc. are all appreciated, but I don't have time for journal articles at this point, as I really need a simplified version--I am not a doctor). Thank you!

3. Oxalates: Anyone have a link to lab values of foods that have oxalates?  I have a couple of list that I am working on, but I want to create a super spreadsheet of foods that also shows me histamines (I actually don't personallyneed this anymore but I already have a histamine food list to mesh into this) and LECTINS.  If someone already has a LECTINS VIZ. OXALATES list I would be so happy to be able to see it!

4.  About me:  I came here because I'm improving my health and had a big improvement last year with deleting grains, nuts, seeds, xanthan, guar, gums, and carageenan.  Plus I added Megasporebiotics.  These 2 changes took me from a knee that had been swelling for 3 years, PMDD, and histamine intolerance to feeling the best I've felt in 10+ years.  I have Hashimoto's but by the time it was diagnosed with thyroid antibodies, my thyroid is actually functioning (although head hair is a bit thin and I'm sad it probably won't get thick again as it's been thin for so long).  Looking back it could be that it was just a major reduction in nebulous "inflammation" (gut related), BUT, it could have been that I reduced oxalates so much.  I had also been taking high dose Vitamin C for years due to histamine intolerance, so when I started improving, I didn't take that any more.  I don't have dates written down, so it is my best guess that I had reduced oxalates drastically just by deleting all seed-things (even tho I still ate celery and other plants without paying attention to oxalates).

THANK YOU for reading!

Hi Rachel

It is all forms of VA and also accutane and any forms of these in skin care etc.

I would suggest to start reading Grants ebooks.

I suspect oxalates become less of an issue as you go onto a low VA way of eating and support your bodies detox. That has been my experience.

I am in the Nutritional Restored group which has been very helpful to keep up to date with the low VA way of eating.

🙂

Mokus,  What is the "Nutritional Restored" group and how do I access it?

Thank you!

Hi @rachel-2 I’ve just put a comment to you on another post. Nutrition restored .com is Garrett Smith’s website. There is a link to his Mighty Network vA detox programme & discussion forum on the website. I have found this to be an invaluable resource. It costs about $60 I think but worth every penny imo. Some people on here are not using this resource but I personally wouldn’t do the vA detox without the information on there.

Obviously Grant’s ebooks & blog are also invaluable & there is some very useful information in the discussions on here. Grant talks to Garrett Smith regularly & does a monthly Q&A with him so their work is not separate or opposing but complementary. Grant developed the theory but Garrett Smith is a naturopath applying the detox with clients. Both useful resources imo.

I’m sorry to hear about your & your husband’s health issues - it sounds like you’ve had a tough time. From what you have said I would be highly suspicious that you both have vA toxicity. Autoimmune diseases seem to go hand in hand with vA poisoning as does histamine & oxalate issues. I found drawing out a timeline of my health ups & downs with changing diet/supplements/life events very revealing. From my understanding there is evidence that high dose vitamin C slows down vA metabolism & keeps it stored in the liver. This can give short term relief (gets vA out of blood) but long term lead to vA build up & toxicity. Short term gain & long term pain. Maybe stopping vC allowed your body to get rid of some stored vA? I think that diet changes & probiotics can help symptoms but getting to the real route cause will involve addressing vA toxicity imo.

It's preformed vitamin a, beta-carotene, and also other carotenoids that have very little or no vitamin activity.

Garret Smiths program is sloppy and he recommends many foods that have plenty of carotenoids which can slow down your progress significantly. His research forum is very interesting though (and free) and his paid programme might still be useful for meal ideas.

Garrett Smith’s detox programme has a lot more than just ‘meal ideas’ - I wouldn’t want someone to get the wrong idea 🤣  I listen to his videos every week too & the last 2 weeks I’ve had information that has given me the most useful step forward in this process that I’ve had for ages. Feeling happy.

I too have found Garrett Smiths info and videos really helpful.

I have found Garrett Smith VA detox program hugely helpful. No matter what choices you make, there is still work involved. There is reading, putting into practice, observing symptoms and making adjustments to suit you. The program has evolved considerably since I started 2 years ago. It is not just low VA and a list of foods. It is learning about what supports our bodies ability to detox the VA. Yes his list of foods are much broader than Grant's however you have personal choice as to how you follow the program. I like that he is able to adapt and change as he learns more. This doesn't mean I personally take on every new idea however it gives me feedback that helps in such a new area of health.

What a good articulate summary @mokus - this is exactly what I think.
