niacin and picolinic

Talked with my Doc of 40 years recently.  Her first objection to my taking part in LYL was my supplementing zinc picolinate.  She and friends found that picolinic acid was a toxin decades ago.  She thought it ironic that I was in a detox program and one of the go to supplements was zinc picolinate.  She also recognized the likelihood of success arguing that point with anyone selling zinc picolinate supplements.  Garrett Smith swears by it and declared all other forms of zinc do not work.

So I raised this topic with other friends on another thread earlier.

The Calcium Connection

I realize you have to sign up to see this thread so I asked permission to repost her pertinent comment elsewhere.  Answer was yes.

I remember hearing years ago about how picolinic acid and nicotinic acid are so similar.  Wonder what the relationships are.  And what they mean for us.  And how this bears out in conversations about the efficacy and risks of supplements in general let alone megadosing nicotinic acid.

Thoughts?

L H Interesting how you guys are coming out with this information about Zn picolinate. Do you know that picolinic acid's chemical formula is identical to NA, the only difference is that it has nitrogen atom sitting in a different position in the ring? No wonder that it is produced from tryptophan as NA is produced from tryptophan too. I stopped taking all my supplements back in April. If I have to take Zn again, I would go to with Zn glycinate or gluconate as those forms are soluble in water and are probably going to be better absorbed. Neither Zn picolinate nor Zn niacinate are soluble compounds.
