Old School Bodybuilding Diets

Old school bodybuilding diets were loaded with VA...

It seems many were healthy and strong, not sure what to make of it.

https://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/golden-era-diet-supplements-glory-days-of-bodybuilding.htm

We based our meals on meat, eggs and cheese. Sounds a little heavy and boring, but it worked. Lean red meat was popular, as it not only added size but strength as well. Chicken was number two on the list but today is number one. Red meat is blamed for heart attacks and hardening of the arteries, which is called cholesterol today.

Our standard breakfast was hamburger patty, whole eggs and cottage cheese. Using the whole egg was preferred as the fat in the yolk was used for energy and not stored as fat. Cottage cheese was a perfect source of protein and also calcium.

One famous bodybuilder would take raw liver from the market, put it in a blender and drink it. He said he had the best results from that and looking at him, I believe it. I remember a few guys drinking quarts of milk on the beach, which was pure cream.

We also took a lot of desiccated liver tablets, which you don't see around today. They were not only high in protein but rich in iron and B vitamins as well. Sometimes ingesting up to fifty a day was normal. They were replaced by Amino Acid tablets years later.

Cheese omelets and cottage cheese were a favorite among bodybuilders as a good protein snack and pumped plenty of protein into the muscle. The cheese again was considered good fat for burning.

Not sure of the time frame of the links, but was the golden age also the start of golden age of steroids?  Wonder if that would have affected things.

This applies to me personally (see my posts on vitamin K2) that's why I believe something is missing in the theory about A. I think the retinoids use some other nutrient and once that nutrient is deficient (or if we have too fee of it to start with) then the retinoids become toxic otherwise there is no problem. I literally grow up on eggs milk and meat in Bosnia and ate lots of cheese here in Switzerland yet have never had any health problem whatsoever while people very close to me who ate much less of the retinoids have the toxicity. This puzzles me.

-Short term gains for long term problems?

-Probably only reporting on the healthy guys with large livers, etc... that benefited and not the ones who did not see gains, so possible bias?

-Before glyphosate and GMOs?

First off these guys were all on steroids and much larger than an average guy with more muscles. That might change things.

Second the bulk of their calories came from beef and starches. Check out serge nubret diet for example of that.

Liver was purely used like a supplement. It just makes a good story no way was it used daily.

Some 'gurus' like Vince gironda and recently Polinquin favored much higher eggs consumption. Both died very prematurely from heart attacks.

Low fat cottage cheese is actually not that high in A at all.

Also I urge everyone to check out the vertical diet. Basically urging weight-lifters to increase calories only with rice and beef to avoid the numerous issues with other foods. World strongest man Thor and many many others been doing with years and claim it's life changing. Results prove it.

I did best with beef and white rice. I am a lifter myself.

Ron

Great points from everyone.

At a guess I'd say steroids do increase VA requirements.

Will check out the Vertical Diet Ron, good to hear that Thor is eating mostly rice and beef.

I think it all depends on how much you are able to store, how fast your body uses it and how efficient your digestive system is at eliminating it through bile. Oh and how toxic one is with substances like glyphosate that block VA metabolism.
