Onion and depression

Page 1 of 2Next

Few weeks ago I had a very intense craving for raw onions that became my daily side dish ever since. Then I started to experience depression that I didn’t know existed. I got a deep understanding why people commit suicide.  Physically, I felt ‘poisoned’ and was ready to resort to aggressive detoxification measures but had no energy to put them into practice.

It took me a while to figure out that onion may be involved. Finally, the day before yesterday, I abandoned onions and garlic, and today this dark cloud seems to be lifting

I vaguely remember some connection between the vitamin A, sulfation pathways, detoxification, etc. but cannot remember the details. If anyone knows something, please spill your beans.

I returned to a simple diet of meat, beans and rice, and have very little appetite for anything else other than dark chocolate which I seem to crave. I restarted taking magnesium because of the chocolate cravings and because some light cramps popped up.

I am relieved to be coming back to the land of the living.
What was that?? Any theories would be appreciated.

Onions, garlic and other sulfurous veggies can move around mercury and probably other heavy metals. They help remove them from tissues, but there is no guarantee they will be detoxified, they can end up travelling to a new place in the body instead of being excreted.

There is also something about sulfide (which are in those veggies) slowing down ADH if I recall correctly.

Alliums are quite toxic and if you're sensitive to those toxins you're going to be in for a bad time.

Garrett Smith has written about sulfides and sulfites slowing the dehydrogenase system, so it is quite possible you temporarily sidetracked your detox pathways.

Probably you've started craving quercetin.

this works best but please beware of polyphenols, fiber, lectins and other antinutrients from beans.

I have cut back my use of garlic and onions by half.  I find when I do have a jolt of it I have body odor for a day.  I don't think anyone in the family has noticed that I've cut back at all.  We occasionally use garlic as an antibiotic.  Powerful stuff.

Thank you for chiming in. I had 2 HMA tests over last few years and they did not indicate any trouble with mercury or other heavy metals. But who knows what is lurking in the dark cellular corners and pop up when aggravated. I wonder if the soluble fibre in the beans would catch and remove dislodged heavy metals.

Thank you for your comment.  Yes, it is possible that I developed some sensitivity to the alliums. I always enjoyed them in robust quantity until few months ago when I noticed some heartburn after eating cooked onions. I stopped for a while until the craving hit me. What is really weird is that my daughter who lives 8 hours away from me had similar experience!

Thank you. It very much might be that my already very poorly functioning enzymes got a punch in the face. I seem to not want anything other than very bland chicken/beans/rice at the moment.

Thank you. I am cooking my beans in a traditional way (soak, high heat, baking soda). To be honest, I am not concerned about the antinutrients in the beans. My only regret is that I eschewed them for years, following the Paleo, Keto and Carnivore diets. Eating is intrinsically hazardous to health but in MHO the benefits outweigh the risk when the beans are concerned.
