Preparation for Serum Retinol Test

With regard to the serum retinol test:
"Patient should fast for 12 hours and abstain from alcohol for 24 hours prior to collection. For those who are younger than six months, draw prior to next feeding. Blood should be collected before breakfast in the morning and prior to any medication."
I've been told that for the serum retinol test it's important to have blood drawn within a specific timeframe of fasting. You don't want to fast for too long either. If anyone has specific timeframes please post them.
