Question About Anakinra (medication used to treat cytokine storm)

Hey guys!

I posted this question in the Facebook group, but I thought I would post it here as well:

Does anyone know if the drug Anakinra would hinder the vitamin A detox process in any way?

According to Wikipedia, it is “a recombinant and slightly modified version of the human interleukin 1 receptor antagonist protein.” It is used to manage several inflammatory diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis, Kawaski disease, and macrophage activation syndrome (MAS).

Doctors have also been using it to suppress the cytokine storm occurring in COVID-19 patients.

So, I have been trying to wrap my head around how this works and how it affects vitamin A detox (but I do not have a science background and my brain fog is making me go all “wuuut” when I am trying to read information about this 🙃). All I understand so far:

- Interleuken-1 is related to LRAT (the enzyme that ”makes” retinyl esters).
- Interleukin-1 can signal for retinyl ester to move out of the liver, and also can down-regulate LRAT.

Further questions:

1) Anakinra acts on the interleukin 1 receptor antagonist, does that mean it is STOPPING the antagonist from preventing the interleukin 1 from doing what it does?

2) Is the following quote saying that interleukin-1-receptor antagonist is a good thing or a bad thing for schizophrenia patients? If schizophrenia is worsened by vitamin A toxicity, then maybe this is a piece of what is going on for those individuals...

“Mutations in the IL1RN gene results in a rare disease called deficiency of the interleukin-1–receptor antagonist (DIRA).[12] Variants of the IL1RN gene is also associated with risk of schizophrenia.[13][14] Elevated levels of IL1RN has been found in serum of schizophrenia patients.[15]”
