ribovlavin in cyclic vomiting and migraine

Well, last night I was up again with what I suppose is CVS and consider it one of the problems that has responded (but not 100%) to going lower VA.   As you may know, I'm pretty anti-supp at this late date in my life.  However, when searching the web for ideas I found this one.  I thought it was especially interesting, given that this supp is considered important by many here.  If you'd like, respond with your fave version of this supp?

Abstract

Cyclic vomiting syndrome is an episodic disorder considered to be a migraine variant. Riboflavin is efficient in the prophylactic treatment of migraines in adults. We describe the effectiveness and tolerance of riboflavin treatment in three children with cyclic vomiting syndrome. All of them fulfilled the diagnosis criteria for cyclic vomiting syndrome. They received prophylactic monotherapy with riboflavin for at least 12 months. Excellent response and tolerability was observed.

Conclusion: Based on clinical observation in three cases, riboflavin may be an effective and safe prophylactic treatment for children with cyclic vomiting syndrome.

What is known: CVS is one of the "childhood periodic syndromes" classified as a migraine subtype by the International Headache Society. Riboflavin is currently used as a prophylactic treatment in patients with migraine.

What is new: Riboflavin may be an effective and safe prophylactic treatment for children with CVS. Increasing doses of riboflavin and long periods of prophylaxis may be needed in some children..

@lil-chick sounds really nasty 😞

I definitely think I’m prone to riboflavin deficiency symptoms - gravel in eyes feeling is supposed to be one. I take riboflavin 5 phosphate by Thorne. It’s 36.5mg which seems a lot so I empty out over half the capsule into the bin & reseal so take between 10-15 mg. I use this as it was recommended by my first nutritional therapist who I think is an intelligent person. I take it once or twice a week at most. I’m very wary of supplements nowadays.

I also take the Thorne riboflavin.  I open the capsule and have a sprinkle each day.  A capsule lasts about a week.

@rachel that’s sounds a much more economical way of doing it! I assumed it would be too messy or taste nasty but I’ll give that a try 😀

It does have a bit of a taste but it's not bad.  I sprinkle it onto my spoon when eating breakfast (overnight oats) so it doesn't go everywhere.  Once it's all used up if I still need B2 I think I'll look for a liqiud.  Metabolics (UK source) do one which is a nice low dose but it does have citric acid in it.  I'm not sure if that is a concern or not.

Chris Masterjohn PhD has articles about the right amount of riboflavin intake being first step for dealing with MTHFR symptoms.

I have been following his MTHFR protocol.

I'm new here, and all new to the vA theory.

I have been taking lots of supplements for years as I deal with my health problems and try to heal gut. I have made a lot of progress. Now I'm thankful that I haven't been taking a multivitamin or any Vit A supplements, but in most recent year I have been taking beef liver and organs capsules every day, so now I have to decide what is my new tack.

Hi @rachel-2 welcome to vA toxicity! I arrived 2 years ago & found it all made complete sense & correlated totally with my health problems. I’m sure it will take a while to understand all the information. Dr Garrett Smith’s mighty network detox programme is the other place with heaps of information (he’s a naturopath who after reading Grants work devoted his practise to vA detox programme & research).

I’m not personally a fan of Chris Masterjohn for many reasons. I think he sells liver supplements so is likely to recommend them. He’s certainly not putting out correct information on vA. He’s not the worst of the health gurus out there though imo!! It’s very difficult to know who to believe when ‘experts’ are saying such different things.

I was lucky in a way as my health clearly took a downturn when I took cod liver oil & then another clear downturn when I added eye carotenoids & retinyl palmitate - large undeserved weight gain & cholesterol increase & many classic vA toxicity symptoms - so when I read Grant’s ebooks I had a lightbulb moment that has never gone out. For others the correlation may not be so obvious and therefore it is more difficult to be certain. However, from what I’ve learnt in the last 2 years if you have chronic health problems it’s certainly an aspect worth examining.
