Scurvy

How does Grant does not get scurvy if he eats bison and rice? I thought vitamin c absorption was reduced when carbs were consumed.

Hi @jean-philippe

I think this topic has been discussed before on the forum.

Scurvy is very likely caused by vit A toxicity, not vit C deficiency.  However, vit C does reduce the severity of vit A toxicity, at least in the short term.

Animal foods have a lot of dehydroascorbate.

Interesting. I would be curious to add back in rice and see how I do. Right now, i'm 100% strict carnivore.

There also seems to be a connection to non-fresh meat that seafarers knew about.  I'm assuming that Grant eats fresh meat, not preserved meat like would have been taken on a long sea voyage.

They had live animals on board as well.

Interesting. I was starting to dig around earlier about what sailors ate during the time they got scurvy.

@jean-philippe Do you have signs of Vitamin A toxicity?  I've been doing a low Vitamin A version of carnivore to cure my own Vitamin A toxicity and would love to compare notes with another person on carnivore...I've come across very few people who stuck with carnivore after realizing they had Vitamin A toxicity.

I came across a list and I don't think I have any symptoms. I have been carnivore for a year and a half
