Searching meat alternatives

I had an painful attack of gout in my big toe tonight. I can't go on with meat every day. Besides beans, what are the best vegetable protein meat substitutes that are low in VitA?

Hi Joel, sorry to hear about your gout.  People are gouty in my family and I can't help but think it is because we don't deal with VA very well.    I have a big toe with some sort of crystal in it.  My daughter stepped on it a month or two ago and I screamed like an idiot.   There is something wrong with that toe, and my body is obviously very touchy about it.

A few weeks later, my cat was very sick and I spent most of the day on my knees with the upper side of my feet against the hard tile floor.  That night, my big toe ached in my sleep and woke me once or twice.  It was the closest I've had to a gout episode.

Strangely, it has been very good since then.  I've often seen that, in this VA process, that things get worse before they get better.

It is gaining a bit more flexibility too.  Something is in that joint, but I think my body is working on it.  Slowly.

Is it VA or maybe it's the oxalates?   I think most of us are probably getting rid of oxalates inadvertently.

A gouty friend of mine has to be very careful about what he DRINKS.    I don't think he relates gout to meat as much as you are.  Of course, everyone has their theories and triggers.    I think he especially avoids beer.

I'm realizing that I didn't even come close to answering your question which was non-bean, vegetable, low-VA protein.   It could be that you are trying to find something that doesn't exist and that is why people eat meat.

I could say skim raw milk, but that isn't a vegetable.  I drink skim raw milk, but I know others here don't trust casein.

One thing I've realized is that when you throw out trad food  ways you often run into the fact there is a reason your ancestors ate that way.    All food is toxic in some way or another.  I have a very smart old guy in my life and he has often accused me of being too extreme.  I once tried to convince him that white carbs were just sugar and he told me NO because, in his life, he KNOWS they act differently than sugar.  And he is right.  There is a reason that white carbs are a part of so many eating ways.  They are low in SOME poisons.

Gluten is a non-bean vegetable protein...   of course many here won't want gluten.  I eat refined wheat, and TRY (often unsuccessfully) to try to find organic.  I suppose gluten isn't a complete protein.

Small amounts of nuts can be eaten, I eat a tea spoon of walnuts every other day, but I'm thinking they have some veg poisons.

Egg white might goof up your b-vities.

Meat is good because it is low in veg poisons and gives you building blocks to live.  And zinc and B12 and fats that are approximately like your own.

how do you react to egg whites or eggs ? I am curious about gout, I dont have pain in big toe , but pain on top of my hands , wrist and top feet . Have you checked up your uric acid levels . I checked mine were at normal range ? how did you diagnose that it actually gout

I really don't know it is gout--it's just a guess.  Gout is in my family lines, and it is there in the common place gout goes (big toe), however, perhaps it is from an old injury or even regular arthritis.

I wonder if you might need to slide into meat more slowly.  Did you spend a lot of time veg?  I've read some articles on "recovering from vegetarianism".  One thing that was recommended was to go slowly, and perhaps start with something like broth.

I eat a little egg here or there during M-F (say, in a muffin) and my lips don't peel.  On the weekends I've been making reduced yolk omelette for hubs and I, and my lips peel more.

I don't eat a Grant-like diet, I'm just on a LOWERED VA diet.  It is much lower than I was eating, but not ultra low.  I eat all the meats.  It might be smart not to focus too much on one meat?

I've heard seafoods like shrimp can be a trigger for gout so maybe not those...I might also avoid aged meats.   To me, gout seems to be something that accompanied the "high style of living" of royalty.  Cream and wine and   Fois gras, caviar.   I bet if you live more "peasant" for a while it will subside.  That is my intuitive sense.

I love the idea of spelt bread.  I was making a sourdough spelt that was partially white.  It had a bit of honey.  It was very popular here.  Spelt bread and broth might be nice.  Broth will help push vegetable proteins toward being more complete.

You will probably need zinc and b-vities if you reduce meat.

Is too protein bad for health , I ate like 1kg of meat and 7 egg whites  everyday for about 2 months , I am worried it might have caused some damage to me . my bad but , I was feeling real good on that diet

I'm a little confused about your question, but I think that my body liked the proteins in the egg white omelettes, but there is a thing called avedin in egg white that does something to biotin?

I eat a small serving of meat at each meal, as part of a balanced meal of carb, fat, protein...I'm sorry I can't think in grams, LOL
