Selenium Decreases Vitamin A In liver and Serum

In animals that died of selenium poisoning, Rosenfeld and Beath (216) observed decreases in vitamin A and ascorbic acid. There was a decrease in blood protein and an increase in nonprotein nitrogen. When selenium feeding was discontinued before injury was severe, there was a slow but gradual increase in the blood protein and a decrease of nonprotein nitrogen.
Gradual depletion of protein and sulfur in the liver was associated with the poisoning in sheep (216). Even 64 days after discontinuing selenium feeding, the liver had 10 per cent less than the normal nitrogen content. Protein depletion of the liver during selenium feeding and protein re- placement after its discontinuance took place gradually. The heart in some cases also showed depletion of protein. But the kidney, lung, and spleen showed no changes in nitrogen, protein, and sulfur. Vitamin A and ascor- bic acid decreased in the livers of animals that died."
