Skin Redness in Low Carbers
Quote from YH on December 31, 2018, 3:43 pmI've been paying attention the skin of many low carb gurus, and I've been noting that a lot of low carbers have very red skin. It does not a healthy tone at all. Especially the one's who have been low caring long term. Kwasnieski, a Polish doctor who promotes a ketogenic diet, has the reddest skin I've ever seen. Additionally, I scoped out the Reddit forum, and there are many people complaining of reddening faces and skins after starting a ketogenic diet. I think the infamous keto rash may also be related to the sudden increase in Vitamin A in the diet. Many of them base their diet on dark greens, butter, and egg yolks, in addition to bacon.

I developed that redness for the first time in my life when I was doing low carb/paleo. I ate lots of the foods you mentioned nearly every day plus took cod liver and krill oil. It never went away even after years of eating plenty of carbs until I started low-no vitamin A this past summer. It's nice that my skin tone is completely normal now after 8 years of redness. I noticed my parents both had the redness too especially on their chests despite never doing a low carb diet. I don't think they ever took A supplements either. It seems like it corresponds to the middle-age liver reduced storage capacity in my family. It hit me in my early 40's but I was really overdoing it with A about that time and coming off about 20 years of using retin-a. Your theory matches my personal experience YH.

Quote from somuch4food on December 31, 2018, 8:36 pmToday, at a family gathering, I couldn't help but notice that everyone has skin redness. Even my teenage cousin seems to have rosacea.
I wouldn't have noticed this a few months ago, but almost everyone seems to have symptoms of vitamin A toxicity.
Most eat an american diet high in meat and dairy and somewhat follow government guidelines and diet folklore: cutting starch, sugar and fat to lose weight.

Quote from Guest on December 31, 2018, 10:50 pmI had acne as a teenager but by 20 my skin was perfectly clear white complexion. Never took anything it just magically cleared up when I simplified my diet ( ate less and started working out). Then I started bodybuilding. There used to be a popular diet back then called "the anabolic diet" basically keto with a carb up day. The best of both of world lol. I would eat meat, pork, bacon, eggs, spinach and lots lots of cheese during weekdays and on weekend it was refeed day with ... Sweet potatoes and butter. I am not kidding. I think I did that for over 6 months but when I stopped I kept most of the food selection. By age 26 I had full blown red cheeks and other weird skin discoloration on my face (darker skin, different tones) . I guess you can call it Rosacea or whatever. I am middle eastern decent this condition is literally non existent in my family tree. It's still there just like a permanent stamp
Dermatologist love to blame this one on genetics, they usually attribute it to northern Europeans especially the Irish. I think it's bullshit because you can google and see that the condition is now increasing everywhere on the world.
I think keto/paleo/carnivore are stupid diets. Cutting out proven staples like white starches is completely needless and potentially harmful in the long term. However, there is also the factor of food selection.
I have seen certain carnivores from YouTube do extremely well on just steak and water. Others who incorporate organ meat, dairy (yes even raw.. ) and eggs still have tons of allergies and problems. None of them can explain this and would never dream that it could be the VA.
Don't forget most keto people push salads as well with colorful veggies and things like kale that I used to eat. I think those are the absolute worst.

Frank Tufano, who eats salmon roe cod liver oil and organs and took accutane because he had cystic acne, somehow manages to maintain a decent skin though. I wonder how that is even possible. Of course he also suffers from insomnia and tons of allergies and says he has candida so theres probably the downside of VA-madness. It seems as if he is trapped in a vicious circle and has to maintain a crazy daily amount of VA consumption or otherwise he breaks out in acne.

Quote from Guest on January 1, 2019, 1:29 pmFrank Tufano also took accutane because he suffered from acne before which must have been severe. He also used to eat tons of sweet potatoes before he started carnivore. He's one of the people who influenced me last year to add more liver which started my health crisis.
I feel bad for him, he's still very young but suffers from serious issues now. Insomnia is no joke. He can't even eat an egg without reaction that's ridiculous. He will definetly have more problems when he is in his 30s as he's doing a lot uncessary damage to himself. I blame it on those wester pricers brainwashing him with all that nutrient density bs.
At that age you can tolerate more abuse. I think this is where individual response to VA comes into play with each person's liver detoxing this toxin in a different way. Mine seems to send it directly to the skin on my face. My relative for example has perfect skin but is suffering with crohn (he's also mid twenties). I think eventually the symptoms will become more widespread and both external/internal organs will be effect no matter what the clinical name of the disease is.
Also, people who take accutane tend to have good skin for years and years. Until they report eczema later on life, fertility issues and others "side effects" .
All in all, I think Tufano is well presented but he is giving very dangerous advice. Check the documentary posted in the other thread about Sweden and osteoporosis. They consume tons of cod liver oil, fish and cheeses. He doesn't understand that health isn't about nutrient density but about avoiding poisoning. Your gut bacteria can produce most the nutrients for you without much help

Quote from Guest on January 1, 2019, 1:36 pmFrank Tufano mentions that he has LOW testosterone. He doesn't even seem capable to grow facial hair. Do you think that's linked to accutane usage ? He was also on soy formula as a kid which he attributes his ills from but I am wondering now if that's the main culprit because those formulas are always fortified with VA

Quote from who_am_i on January 1, 2019, 1:45 pmRon I absolutely agree with your statement. It was also partially Frank Tufano who made me incorporate liver and butter in my diet, but I am not mad at him. I am particularly interested in his good skin. I am afraid he is doing a second sort of accutane treatment again by eating all this retinol, which means getting short term skin results for long term health problems. Also feel sorry for him because he is a nice guy but his advice (recent video about Vitamin A) is dangerous. He absolutely verifies Grant´s theory in every aspect, also his eating 3 pounds of sweet potatoes per day before.
