Slip ups - we're human afterall
Quote from somuch4food on January 26, 2019, 7:43 pmI thought it would be great to have a thread to report slip ups and failed experiments. So, that we can learn from each other.
This week I felt good, I had energy most days. And when I feel good, I tend to lower my guard. I am now feeling the consequences of my laisser-aller. So, today I ate chicken wings full of BBQ spices with fries and pasta with spinach for supper. I know, I know. Spinach is one of the worst A sources. The symptoms appeared fast. In the afternoon, I was freezing and had no energy, I almost fell asleep watching the Australian Open replay. In the evening, my back pain came back, my vision seemed more blurry, I was freezing and I had no drive to do anything. I also got this weird vibration feeling across the whole body (I think it might be inflammation).
I remember getting this exact sensation after hockey games each sunday afternoon a few years back before my pregnancy and before knowing about A. I just laid down all afternoon watching NFL and sometimes sleeping. I thought I was lazy... I think it was exertion and sweating releasing A into my system.

Quote from Mokus on January 26, 2019, 9:06 pmHi Somuch4food,
Thanks for sharing. I have wondered how much can be a trigger and likely it is different for all of us and how far we are along the detox path. Sounds like you are piecing together what can trigger your symptoms. I can relate to the lack of energy and drive at times. I figure once we are on the other side of the detox we can be selective at times and not be so rigid. Although I am quite liking the simplicity, I am still needing to make food for my daughter who may not need to be so strict.

“also got this weird vibration feeling across the whole body”
I used to experience that sensation a lot when I was drinking fortified milk, and eating carrots and liver regularly. I’ve only had it happen a couple times since going low A.
Yesterday I went out for dinner for a special occasion and had some blue cheese and butter (@500 IU of A). I woke up somewhat moody and with more aches and pains than normal but nothing horrible. I tolerated that better than I would have 6 months ago but it still isn’t something I’m going to do regularly. Bella

Quote from Guest on January 27, 2019, 10:16 amI did have a bit too much dairy around the holidays. The effect was subtle, but did become more pronounced after a few weeks. I am seem to do alright if I consume dairy irregularly, as in not everyday. The first change I notice is in my vision. It became less clear and somewhat narrow in perspective. If I persist eating some Vitamin A, I start to get headaches and become easily irritated. Then the skin issues show up. It's almost like clockwork. Lowering Vitamin A reverses the mental and vision issues within a day, but the skin issues take up to a two weeks to fully resolve.
I do think I went a bit too heavy on grain starch, which did cause some digestive issues at one point. Making an effort to eat low vitamin A fruits and vegetables has been helpful.

Quote from somuch4food on February 14, 2019, 12:26 pmI was so focused on fruits and veggies that I kinda forgot that grains, nuts and seeds are potential problems too.
So, after reflecting as to why I was feeling so low in the last 2 weeks, I started connecting dots today. The 4 foods that I suspected (nuts mix, flax seeds, chia seeds and pasta) to be responsible for my downfall turn out to all be sources of lutein, a carotenoid, that I seem to be super sensitive to.
The most problematic nuts I identified in my nuts mix are pistachios (not much in the mix, but really high in lutein) and cashews (a lot in the mix, but not too high in lutein)

If you don’t mind my asking, which pasta do you eat?

Quote from somuch4food on February 14, 2019, 5:25 pmThat would be durum wheat. Sometimes, organic not fortified, other times regular fortified.
It's not high in A, but it has a decent amount of lutein, more than refined flour.

Do you have any link to share? I would love to check it out. At least cashews are on dr G's no eat list but he has not mentioned the other foods specifically.
