Slooowwww progress (almost at 6 months)

This will be short for now but just wanted to let those know that might not being seeing changes to hang in there, especially if you've taken liver, vA supplements or eaten lots of carotenoids like I have.

For months I saw no progress really, not even detox cycles but now I am starting to have some goodish days followed by really bad days so at least I am in to that cycling stage I think.

My past consumption history -  I was eating many sweet potatoes, dried mangos and carrots daily and took desicated liver and a fish derived vA supplement for about 4 years before the diet.   Plus I had some of the toxicity symptoms before I even started with all of that, many of which got worse and I also developed new ones including seasonal eczema.  So I definitely think I have toxicity even though I have not been showing much improvement after going low A for months.

My take away message: I think it is wrong to assume that everyone will start seeing improvements within a few weeks and that if they don't that means they don't have vA toxicity.  This is somewhat a new frontier and we don't have all the answers.

Grant said we clear 0.5 % of our VA total per day and that would be if we had none coming in. I have occasionally been eating foods listed as having up to 2 % of the daily requirement, so on those days I would have a net GAIN of 1.5 % of my load.

I agree, and the lower I drop my A intake, the worse my detox symptoms are getting, even beyond 4 months.  But I think I have outdone most of us with respect to A intake, if I can get back to normal health it will be possible for anyone.

2 rounds accutane, RetinA topicals, high dose retinyl palmitate, high dose cod liver oil, large liver intake, large egg yolk, large lifetime fortified milk intake, high cheese/butter/dairy product intake, large bacon intake, RP carrot salad, eating the rainbow and leafy greens.  At this point I am not sure how I am alive! 🙂

Hiya Guest, I appreciate hearing about your slow progress. There is an element of trust when you have had a higher level of VA in your diet for years. I have had short moments of good sleep since low VA so I know it is possible but other changes are minor at the 5 month mark. I wonder if some stores take much longer to clear out. Approaching low VA as a new way of eating and not a definite detox time period is my approach.

Mokus, Grant tells about waiting for a long time before showing any progress and then suddenley seeing a massvie improvement. That happened for me at about 6 weeks. I once asked my husband what the word, "quantum" meant. He said, "Nothing happens, nothing happens, nothing happens, nothing happens, everything happens.

Thanks for sharing. That's encouraging. I've been eating low A for about 4-5 months and haven't had much progress. At the beginning I had a week of what felt like a strong detox and I think my skin has gotten softer but not much has improved in terms of my joints, nerves, sleep. I wonder if I'm just not going low enough in vitamin A. Or perhaps my body just finds it especially hard to get rid of it for whatever reason. Probably both 😏

It's only through diet that I could have overdone the vitamin A. Last year after a couple of months of overloading on 'healthy' vegetables I felt my energy decrease, no longer exercising because of it, sleep got worse and joint and neck pain got worse. As a baby my nose turned orange after eating too much pumpkin. I'm wondering whether my body has a particular dislike of beta carotene.

I'm still not 100% sure vitamin A is my issue but I still feel I need to stick with it longer to find out.

Are you following Grants diet or Smiths diet?

Not sure if you are asking me. I posted previous reply and was going to leave my name but forgot.

Anyway, I'll answer just in case. I've been following Smith's diet. I don't have his official food list but have been reading all his posts and know pretty much what he recommends eating.

I've been putting off following Grants diet because it's so restrictive and I don't think I'll be able to stick to it.

Ah Judy thanks for the reminder. I  think it is also reminding myself of the little changes, with far less aches and pains, body shape changes and more.

Guest - I feel like VA has its tentacles in a great deal of health issues and for some issues it does take time to unravel. And if VA does not seem to be the issue, sure enough there are other connections. Great to hear you are sticking it out to find out.

I'm still not 100% sure vitamin A is my issue but I still feel I need to stick with it longer to find out.

I noticed some people are consuming butter on a low VA diet. IMO this will prevent depletion since butter is so high in VA. I have consumed a LOT of butter in my life and I think cheese and butter are likely to be important foods that lead to VA intoxication in Western populations.

I also think that having some whole grains in the diet is probably a good idea for example breakfast porridge. Oatmeal sequesters bile salts and cholesterol in bile so likely helps prevent retinoids from being recycled. Activated charcoal can probably achieve a similar thing.
