Soil-Transmitted Helminthiasis and Vitamin A Deficiency

"Vitamin A deficiency (VAD) and soil-transmitted helminthiasis (STH) represent two widely prevalent and often overlapping global health problems. Approximately 75% of countries with moderate or severe VAD are coendemic for STH. We reviewed the literature on the complex relationship between STH and VAD. Treatment for STH significantly increases provitamin A (e.g., β-carotene) levels but is associated with minimal increases in preformed vitamin A (retinol)."

"Specifically for VAD, Ascaris expresses a range of retinol-binding proteins, retinol dehydrogenases, and retinoic acid receptors that utilize retinol for growth and development [43]. The pathways through which this occurs and their impacts on the human host remain unclear. "

"Preformed vitamin A (i.e., retinol) has exhibited minimal or inconclusive responsiveness to deworming, but provitamin A (e.g., β-carotene) levels have increased significantly after treatment for STH. Considerations about the sensitivity and validity of serum retinol as an indicator for vitamin A status (Table 1) and the impact of STH infection intensity on disease morbidity make it difficult to interpret null findings from some trials."

The only thing I have come across that can help with auto immune diseases is hookworm therapy. Hookworm therapy gives the immune system a real invader to attack theoretically reducing auto immune insults to the body. However what is less commonly known is that it also lowers VA through loss of it in the blood and probably through fighting the parasitic infection. Hookworms are seen as a harmful parasite but I believe they are more a symbiote that help deplete iron and VA stores and regulate the immune system. Because of the emerging knowledge of VA's role in auto immunity we may now come to realise that hookworm therapy helps regulate auto immunity through VA depletion as well as other proposed mechanisms.

A low VA diet (replete in the other micro nutrients and with appropriate macro nutrient balance) and hookworm therapy could potentially work in synergy together to alleviate and possibly cure a range of diseases.

Fortunately one doesn't need to consume rotten cod livers to be healthy...

Many parasites are very harmful. I heard some raw meat eaters eat raw pork, that is insane. Even salads are a bad idea from a parasite perspective. I don't recommend any raw food apart from skinned or peeled fruit.

Hookworms are one of the most harmless and helpful ones. In nature they are not picked up from raw meat consumption, they are picked up from walking barefoot.

The types of parasites many catch from their pets are much more problematic than hookworm.

Hookworm therapy is not usually unpleasant. They enter through the skin and the area is very itchy for a while, that is all most experience.
