Supplements

Do you take a lot of supplements? Will the diet of rice, meat, beans and cooked apples provide all the nutrients needed?

If there is a team for people who are angry with supplements, I'm on that one.  🙂

lil chick, I came from a lifestyle of several handfuls of supplements (many years ago) - to none - to some. The “some” were really expensive, highly recommended and with some science behind them. I cannot say that they brought any miracles.

With my diet being so very minimal at the monent, I wonder if any supplements would be beneficial or even necessary.

If someone is healthy, they may not need supplements. But I am not healthy now and the body detoxifies and support in the form of some supplements can be helpful. And VA blocks many minerals and some vitamins.

"Will the diet of rice, meat, beans and cooked apples provide all the nutrients needed? " some nutrients are deficient, e.g. vitamin E, K, copper, calcium (in the beginning I needed more calcium)... I personally take vitamin E (low doses 100 IU 2-3 times a week), vitamin K, taurine, choline, TMG for liver, food sourced selenium and boron (e.g. ecological formulas, vibrant health super natural boron),  food sourced b complex (pure synergy or thorne stress b complex - without folic acid) , zinc, iodine and personally  lithium orotate for the brain and silica, magnesium, everything only low doses 1-2 times a week.

I eat sprouted sunflower seeds for vitamin E and copper, walnuts, soaked hemp seeds, chesnuts.

Now I added white sorghum and sometimes black beluga lentils, sprouted mungo.

Chicory root coffe or dandelion, liver tea I drink every day for liver.

I often eat white summer squash.

For calcium  I add to the coffee rice milk with calcium (without fortification, calcium is there from calcified algae)

For vitamin C I take camu camu powder - small amounts.

I often add to the beef sauce brewer's yeast flakes - good natural source of folate and b vitamins (non-fortified, e.g. Lewis Labs).

@bludicka, that is an amazing array of supplements! Thank you for sharing.

I am not sure if Grant is taking any and how 5 years of this diet has affected his nutritional status. If I remember, he mentioned something about magnesium and vit.C but I might be making this up.

My preference would be not to take any but I am not sure if this is an option. I suspect that most of my health issues are related to Hashimoto’s/ vitamin A toxicity.

At the moment I take:

vitamin C (I have receding gums that got worse on the Carnivore diet with lots of liver and because I get little blood-filled pimples when I stop taking it),

vitamin K as I had terrible problem with dental plaque (now much improved),

magnesium because...everyone needs it 😌

Mito-copper as a trial (because I started to have grey hair in my 20 which might suggest low copper)

I also take daily aspirin as I was researching the Ray Peat’s diet and thought that his arguments about it were very convincing

I would like to hear Grant’s thoughts about supplementing.

There are people they feel good on this diet only after few weeks, they have almost no detox symptoms but my toxicity seems to be more serious, it will take me longer to detox, maybe 2-3 years, so I have to support the body more.

I know mitosynergy but I am a bit skeptical.  My hair was almost white at the beginning - very unusual for my age and the people noticed it, I think this is related to the copper and how vitamin A suppresses its functions in the body.

I have taken all kind of supplements, minerals like copper, zinc, selenium, glucosamine, omega 3, omega 9, high dose B vitamins, multivitamin etc. etc. But there are only a few that work , Vitamin D in a dose of 5,000 IE per day (or even more for number of weeks) proved to be a real miracle supplement for me. So Vitamin D is the #1 recommendation for me, especially if you spend a lot of time inside and might be deficient. It improves muscles, joints, bones, mood, ability to withstand cold.  #2 recommendation are anti-oxidants like vitamin E that help to dampen inflammation.

P.s. I'm not sure about copper. A small amount in a multivitamin without vitamin A is probably ok, But a tablet of just 3mg is hard on my stomach and makes me feel sick. I probably don't need it.

I take most of minerals like selenium and iodine only preventive doses, not therapeutic and never high doses of b complex (in the past folate, B1, riboflavin when I was deficient), vitamin D  only for a few weeks, 200 mcg food sourced selenium weekly is not a high dose, it's just to balance possible dietary deficits, I don't eat brasil nuts and seafood.  Only now I take copper in therapeutic doses because I am deficient - and it would be very difficult take such an amount of copper in the diet. Copper is quite heavy on the empty stomach - but chelated  is not a problem for me, sometimes light nausea. The most of healthy people (but the serious VA toxic people are not healthy) who eat legumes, whole grains, nuts.... don't need supplement copper.
