Testing Vitamin A tolerance after 6 years .

Hi All

After almost 6 years of a low vitamin A diet (not almost 0, but very low), I generally don't react to low vitamin A-containing foods. However, I did an experiment last week to see how I would react to something high in Vitamin A, like carrots. I ate carrots every day, even cooking them to make beta-carotene more bioavailable. I consumed almost 300g of carrots every day for the experiment only (I don't recommend anyone eating carrots).

Results: I experienced no reactions at all, neither mental nor physical.

Now, I'm not saying I can go on eating carrots or high vitamin A foods every day for 7-8 months without any issues. But this experiment proves that eventually, as you deplete vitamin A, you can tolerate some of them with no issues at all. Things do get better

I will continue my journey of a low vitamin A diet for life.

Very interesting, thank you for sharing.

Have you ever tested your serum retinol levels?

That’s fantastic @r-2, thanks for sharing your experience!
It will be 6 years for me in July. I’ve noticed for quite some time I tolerate vA foods fine. I didn’t do a formal experiment like you but rather noticed when due to necessity I ate something with vA I felt nothing. I suspect in my case my levels just start to build up because my serum level was lower in 2020 after being strict for 1.5 compared to 2023 after being more moderate in my intake. I’ve been staying at around 10 to 20% of DV recently.

Thank you for sharing @r-2 and @bella ! This is very encouraging and helpful. It is a bit early to test for me. All our best wishes for a good healthy life.

@r-2 I can't recall that I was reacting badly after eating high vit A foods. To me it is not about immediate effect, but accumulative effect and I think that is the case for most people. That's why they eat high vit A foods for decades and only after that they start to have issues.. So even if I felt amazing after eating carrots or liver I wouldn't touch them anyway... Btw I am 6 years on low A as well. 🙂

For me, I have itchiness when high carotene foods make their way out of the body (as a polite way of putting it).  Small amounts of carotene don't do it.   But, for instance, half an avocado might.

Otherwise, in my life, what I saw was that I was reaching a threshold (which got smaller and smaller slowly over time) of having vomiting and headache attacks.   Between attacks I was perfectly normal.   My migraines went from once a year at twelve years of age to about every 2 weeks at 55.  Until I read Grant's work.   Then they became farther and farther apart until they stopped.

I have heard of people who get headaches daily, I would bet they are very toxic with VA.

hey

@jiri

How have you been ? Hows your health after 6 years of low vitamin A. Did it solve your thyroid issues ?

I have lowered my vitamin A levels to the point where if I have any vitamin A now, I dont notice anything. However, I still have a big problem with the carotenoid lutein. Even a small accidental exposure brings back all my symptoms for 2-3 days. So for the choline lovers - at least for me - still no eggs! 😉
