The effect of hypervitaminosis A and other dietary factors on the young pig

While looking for a link between cartilage destruction and vitamin A I stumbled upon an old dissertation "The effect of hypervitaminosis A and other dietary factors on the young pig."  The dissertation is from 1964! The 188 page document doesn't contain the word "autoimmune" - probably not invented yet at that time - but is very relevant.

Several symptoms described with high dose A experiments on pigs look pretty much the same symptoms I experienced when I was diagnosed with aggressive rheumatoid arthritis years ago and I was looking for. Lot of other symptoms are mentioned like the effect on skin, hair, hemorrhages, thyroid, bones etc.  Several pigs got such massive doses that they eventually died. Nothing mentioned about blindness apart from some eye issues.  The positive effect of vitamin C and vitamin K and to lesser extend vitamin D & vitamin E are mentioned. Really fascinating to read this 55 year old document taking in mind Grant's "Ending the Mystery of Autoimmune" book.

Thanks for finding that and sharing it. I agree, it is a very valuable report.  Just based on a quick read of it, I think these are some of the more noteworthy statements:

Rodahl (1949) found in detailed studies of prolonged administration of vitamin A excess to rats, mice, guinea pigs, rabbits, dogs, and chickens that symptoms resembling those of scurvy often developed. In addition, microscopic examination of  teeth indicated disarrangements of the odontoblasts and amorphous calcification of the inner dentine as well as deposits of calcium in the pulp.

And  ….

Thompson et al. (1961) used sublethal doses of vitamin A acid to show that male rats so treated lost their ability to produce sperm.

How is it possible that Accutane et al was ever approved and still remains on the market? It is just so disturbing to know that this information was published way back in 1961.

And ….

Most of the pigs in this experiment were slow to learn to eat, consequently after two weeks, seven of the original 24 animals had to be replaced.

And ….

The widespread hemorrhages which occur in hypervitaminosis A may be due to failure of the blood to clot promptly (hypoprothrombinemia), but the massive and fatal hemorrhages so frequently encountered must surely be accomplished by a certain amount of structural breakdown or disintegration of the tissue involved.

And ….

It was observed that younger and/or smaller pigs were more susceptible to hypervitaminosis A than older or larger pigs.

 And ….

Tremors were not uncommon at this time.

 And ….

Internal hemorrhages often occurred at limb joints, in the kidney, and in the intestinal tract.

 And ….

High dietary levels of carotene added to diets (938 or 750.2 mg per pound) sometimes caused Increased blood clotting times and occasionally death in pigs which at necropsy were found to have succumbed to massive internal hemorrhages similar to those found in deaths caused by excess vitamin A palmitate.

As with many other reports, including some others recently shared on this forum, I think the answer to the mystery of the chronic diseases has been pretty much staring researchers in the face for many decades now.

 

After two weeks on the experi-

mental diets, several pigs on the diet containing the highest

level of vitamin A, ^^0,000 lU per pound of feed, began to

show symptoms of hypervitaminosis A. The first death loss

occurred at this time, however, the pig which died was healthy

in outward appearance, although slightly smaller In size than

his pen mates. Within a week» all the other pigs on this

treatment exhibited symptoms of hypervitaminosis A of various

degrees. The larger pigs were apparently more resistant than

the smaller ones, and of pigs of the same weight, the slower

growing ones usually were affected first."

 

 

Intersting looks like size makes some more resistant. I wonder if it has to do with liver size
